Devils hold off Senators in overtime

NHL: Jaromir Jagr scored a power-play goal 3:39 into overtime, and the New Jersey Devils beat the host Ottawa Senators 3-2 on an emotional Saturday night in Canada’s capital.

It was the Senators’ first game since the shooting death of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo at the National War Memorial on Wednesday. A touching tribute took place prior to puck drop as players and fans united to commemorate the loss of Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, who was killed in a hit-and-run attack Monday near Montreal.

Marek Zidlicky and Damon Severson also scored for the Devils, who snapped a four-game winless streak. Cory Schneider had 33 saves.

Alex Chiasson and Bobby Ryan scored for the Senators, who had won four in a row.

• Sabres drop Sharks: Cody Hodgson and Nicolas Deslauriers each scored their first goal of the season early in the third period and Buffalo continued their dominance over San Jose, beating the host Sharks 2-1.

• Flyers bounce Wings: Michael Raffl scored two goals, and Brayden Schenn netted the winner during a power play with 8:55 remaining to lift Philadelphia to a 4-2 home victory over Detroit.

• Bruins rake Leafs: Patrice Bergeron earned his 500th point on the first of two assists and Tuukka Rask continued his mastery over Toronto as visiting Boston, in their first game without injured captain Zdeno Chara, defeated the Maple Leafs 4-1.

• Pens topple Preds: Sidney Crosby had a goal and two assists and visiting Pittsburgh handed Nashville their first loss in regulation with a 3-0 shutout.

• Nielsen leads Islanders: Frans Nielsen scored three goals in the third period, and the New York Islanders held on for a wild 7-5 win over Dallas.

Backup goalie Chad Johnson made 26 saves for the Islanders in his second straight start.

• Zucker leads Wild: Jason Zucker had two goals, and host Minnesota routed Tampa Bay 7-2.

Zach Parise and Marco Scandella both had a goal and an assist, and 13 Wild players had at least one point.

• Blues handle Blackhawks: Jaden Schwartz, Ryan Reaves and Dmitrij Jaskin all scored, and St. Louis snapped a two-game losing streak with a 3-2 home win against Chicago.

• Canadiens roll: Lars Eller broke a tie midway through the second period, and Max Pacioretty added a goal in the third to give host Montreal a 3-1 victory over the New York Rangers.

Tomas Plekanec netted a short-handed goal in the first period, and Carey Price made 34 saves for the Canadiens.

• Coyotes nip Panthers: Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored at 2:20 of overtime, Mike Smith stopped 23 shots, and Arizona rallied to beat Florida 2-1.

Justin Hodgman scored in his NHL debut and the host Coyotes had a strong defensive game in front of Smith to end a three-game losing streak.

• Ward lifts Caps: Joel Ward scored twice – including the game-winner – to lead Washington to a 3-1 road victory over Calgary.

Ward’s second of the night 5:31 into the second period broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Capitals a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Dawson has lead at AT&T Championship

Golf: Marco Dawson opened with four birdies in the first six holes on the way to a 5-under-par 67 for a lead after two rounds of the Champions Tour’s AT&T Championship in San Antonio, while Bernhard Langer moved closer to clinching the Charles Schwab Cup, even before next week’s season-ending championship.

Dawson leads Woody Austin by one stroke. Former Pullman resident Kirk Triplett is seventh at 8-under after shooting 69.

Langer has a 771-point lead over Colin Montgomerie and can clinch the championship if he gets the lead to 833 points.

• MacKenzie, Svoboda tied: Will MacKenzie made a hole-in-one and finished with a birdie for a 5-under 65 and a share of the lead with Andrew Svoboda in the McGladrey Classic in St. Simons Island, Georgia.

• Korda grabs share: American Jessica Korda rebounded from an opening double bogey for a share of the second-round lead with Lee-Anne Pace in the Blue Bay LPGA in Hainan Island, China.

Murray, Robredo advance to final

Tennis: Andy Murray beat top-seeded David Ferrer 6-4, 7-5 to reach the final of the Valencia (Spain) Open.

Murray will face Tommy Robredo in today’s final after the Spaniard beat Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 7-6 (7), 7-6 (2).

• Federer moves on: Top-seeded Roger Federer beat big-serving Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (8), 3-6, 6-3 to reach a ninth consecutive Swiss Indoors final and his 11th overall in his hometown of Basel.

Federer, who is looking for his sixth Swiss Indoors title after finishing runner-up in the past two editions, will meet David Goffin after the Belgian kept up his remarkable form by defeating teenage wild card Borna Coric 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

• Williams to face Halep: Serena Williams will get a chance to avenge a humiliating loss against Simona Halep after they both advanced to the championship match of the season-ending WTA Finals with victories in contrasting style in Singapore.

Williams beat Caroline Wozniacki in a thrilling contest 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6) to remain on course for a third straight title, while Halep swept aside Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2, 6-2 to put herself in a position for the biggest title of her career.

Real Madrid victorious in El Clasico

Miscellany: Luis Suarez made a strong return from his four-month biting ban, but Barcelona fell 3-1 at rival Real Madrid.

Suarez set up Neymar’s fourth-minute opener, but Real answered with goals from Christiano Ronaldo, Pepe and Karim Benzema to give Barcelona its first league loss of the season.

• Tuktamysheva wins short program: Elizaveta Tuktamysheva of Russia topped the Skate America women’s short program in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.

Tuktamysheva delivered a solid performance and scored 67.41 points to take the lead over countrywoman Elena Radionova (65.57). American Gracie Gold (60.81) was third.

• Miller skips Slalom: Bode Miller is sitting out the season-opening men’s World Cup giant slalom today because of a persistent back injury.

Miller, 37, is getting treatment on a spinal disk and is expected to join the team again for training in Colorado in November.

• Shiffrin, Fenninger tie: Mikaela Shiffrin and Anna Fenninger shared victory in the season-opening women’s World Cup giant slalom in Soelden, Austria.

The American teenager, who led after the first run, and the defending overall champion from Austria both finished in a two-run combined time of 2 minutes, 39.85 seconds.

• Caballero defeats Hall: Randy Caballero of the United States improved to 22-0 after beating Stuart Hall of Britain in a unanimous decision to win the vacant IBF bantamweight title in Monaco.

Ring-side judges scored the bout 116-111, 116-111, 118-110 in favor of the 24-year-old Caballero after an aggressive contest where both boxers landed heavy punches.
