In brief: Free vaccinations for kids
A clinic this weekend in Spokane offers free vaccinations for children ages 2 to 18.
It will offer all vaccinations recommended by health officials. Flu vaccines, including in nasal-mist form, will be available.
The clinic will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at Life Center Foursquare Church, 1202 N. Government Way. Parents are asked to bring their children’s vaccination records.
The clinic is a joint effort by the Spokane Regional Health District, Spokane Public Schools and the church. Call (509) 324-1548 for more information.
Diabetes prevention classes
A free, one-year program starting in October to help residents prevent diabetes is seeking participants.
Group Lifestyle Balance classes, offered by the College of Pharmacy at Washington State University’s Spokane campus, are designed to delay or prevent progression of prediabetes to diabetes. The classes will take place at the Yoke’s store in Mead.
The program is a modified version of Diabetes Prevention Program classes offered by other organizations in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Lisa Woodard, of the pharmacy school.
Free screenings to determine eligibility for the program at Yoke’s will be held from noon to 7 p.m. Sept. 23 and Sept. 30 or by appointment at the pharmacy, 14202 N. Market St. in Mead. Call (509) 242-0201.
Detecting Alzheimer’s early
Learn the 10 signs for early detection of Alzheimer’s disease during a free interactive workshop Monday at Salvation Army Kroc Center, 1765 W. Golf Course Road in Coeur d’Alene at 10 a.m.
Early detection of Alzheimer’s disease gives you a chance to begin drug therapy, enroll in clinical studies and plan for the future. The workshop features video clips of people with Alzheimer’s disease.

Overview of dementia
The Alzheimer’s Association is presenting an overview of dementia – “The Basics: Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease” Sept. 16 at the South Hill branch of the Spokane Public Library, 3324 S. Perry St. at 5:30 p.m.
The free presentation includes information on detection, causes and risk factors, stages of the disease and treatment.

Movement awareness
Spokane Community College is offering two sessions of Awareness Through Movement through its ACT 2 program, starting Sept. 24.
The group lessons are based on the Feldenkrais Method to increase awareness of “how” you move. These easy, gentle lessons focus on adults 50 and older to increase flexibility and balance while decreasing pain and reducing unnecessary effort. The class will explore daily functional movements such as walking, sitting comfortably, squatting, turning, reaching and balance issues.
The first session is at the Corbin Art Center, 507 W. Seventh Ave., at 10:30 a.m. The cost is $21 for the 10-week class.
The second class option is in Spokane Valley at 3:30 p.m. at CenterPlace, 2426 N. Discovery Place. The cost is $16 for 10 weeks.
