Signed The Minnesota Wild have signed right wing Nino Niederreiter to a three-year contract.
• The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed forward Sonny Milano, the club’s first pick in the 2014 NHL draft, to a three-year, entry-level contract. The 18-year-old left wing was the 16th overall pick in June’s draft. Milano spent the past two seasons playing for the U.S. National Development Program, where he had 24 goals and 37 assists in 63 games.
Extended Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber has been given a five-year contract extension through December 2018.
• Rutgers has given football coach Kyle Flood a two-year contract extension.
Investigated An upstate New York sheriff says he has completed his investigation into the death of a driver struck by NASCAR champion Tony Stewart during a sprint car race last month. The district attorney will announce late next week whether Stewart will face any charges.
Announced Portugal soccer coach Paulo Bento is leaving his job after a string of poor results, including a 1-0 loss to Albania. The Portuguese soccer federation says Bento’s departure was by mutual agreement and that his replacement would be announced soon. Bento took charge four years ago and steered Portugal, via the playoffs, to the 2012 European Championship and the recent World Cup.
Finished Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia had season-ending surgery on his left wrist to repair a tendon, clean out scar tissue and reduce some inflammation. Red Sox manager John Farrell said that Pedroia should be 100 percent in about six weeks, allowing him to have a normal offseason.
