Rose gets winner for Seattle

Scores in stoppage time to beat RSL

Don Ruiz Tacoma News Tribune

SEATTLE – Andy Rose scored in stoppage time to get the Seattle Sounders a wild 3-2 win over Real Salt Lake on Friday at CenturyLink Field.

Both teams held and lost leads along the way, and RSL played the final 21 minutes short-handed after a straight red card to defender Ned Borchers.

However, the Sounders couldn’t get that advantage to show on the scoreboard until Rose got to a loose ball in the penalty area and fired it back past RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando.

The result keeps Seattle (17-7-3) atop Major League Soccer, four points ahead of second-place Los Angeles in the same number of games, and eight points ahead of Salt Lake (12-6-10) with one game in hand.

The teams were scoreless for the first 30 minutes, but that changed quickly with a flurry of three goals over the next 13 minutes.

Salt Lake’s Javier Morales scored first.

Lamar Neagle tied it for Seattle in the 35th minute.

The Sounders moved ahead 5 minutes later when Obafemi Martins scored his team-high 13th goal of the season.

Salt Lake tied it at 2-2 on Joao Plata’s goal in the 50th minute.

Seattle got its man advantage in the 68th minute.
