Coeur d’Alene girls win Mountain West Classic

The Coeur d’Alene girls cross country team took first place out of 43 teams Saturday at the Mountain West Classic at the University of Montana Golf Course in Missoula, Montana.

Bozeman was second, Missoula Hellgate was third and Lewis and Clark was fourth.

The Vikings’ top finisher was Josie Brown, who completed the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 33.25 seconds, good enough for 12th place.

West Valley’s McCall Skay was eighth in 18:06.88. Other local runners finishing inside the top 20 were East Valley’s Brittany Aquino (14th; 18:37.78), LC’s Katie Thronson (15th; 18:38.24), CdA’s Caitlin Conway (16th; 18:39.17), CdA’s Kara Story (18th; 18:42.82) and CdA’s Krista Story (20th;19:02.93).

The University boys took second place. The Titans’ Hunter Simpson (15:31.24) and Patrick Miranne (15:32.76) finished eighth and ninth, respectively.

Lake City’s Jake Finney was fourth in 15:19.12.

• East Valley’s Scott Kopczynski and Chad Stevens took the top two spots in the boys race at the Erik Anderson Invitational at Plantes Ferry Park in Spokane. Kopczynski finished the 5,000-meter course in 16:10.78 and Stevens crossed in 16:38.12. West Valley’s Skylar Ovnicek was third in 16:41.70.

Sehome took the team title and Riverside was second. Riverside’s top finisher was Ben Shaw, who took fifth in 17:04.18. Moscow was the girls champion in 19:32.93. Sehome claimed the team title, followed by Sandpoint, Lakeside, Riverside and Moscow.

Lind-Ritzville’s Tracy Melville was third in 19:48.03. Four Sandpoint runners finished inside the top 10, led by Mikhaela Woodward, who took sixth in 20:17.75.

Boys soccer

John Chavez scored in the 64th minute to guide Moscow past Sandpoint 1-0 in an Inland Empire League 4A match in Moscow.

• Cody Bentley’s hat trick lifted Timberlake past St. Maries 4-1 in an Intermountain League game in St. Maries.

Girls soccer

Angel Clark had a hat trick and Priest River blanked Kellogg 4-0 in an Intermountain League game in Kellogg.
