Whitworth quarterback Peterson sets passing records in win
Bryan Peterson’s record-setting performance lifted the Whitworth football team to a nonconference win over La Verne Saturday in La Verne, California.
Peterson completed 59 of 83 passes for 589 yards and had six touchdowns and no interceptions as the Pirates won 50-48.
Peterson’s 14-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Fullman with 30 seconds left gave Whitworth (3-0) the win.
Peterson broke the single-game school record for yards, completions and attempts. He also set two NCAA Division III records: completions and most consecutive passes attempted without an interception.
The teams leap-frogged each other the entire way. Peterson threw four of his six touchdowns in the first half and also scored on a 2-yard run midway through the third quarter.
Whitworth’s Nick Kiourkas had eight catches for 117 yards and a touchdown and Fullman hauled in two touchdown passes.
Brett Moser, Griffin Hare and Drew Clausen also had touchdown catches for the Pirates.
In all, the teams combined for 1,323 yards of total offense.
La Verne (1-1) quarterback William Livingston threw for 469 yards and seven touchdowns. Six of those touchdowns were hauled in by John Lilly, who racked up 274 receiving yards.
The Pirates host Chapman next Saturday in their final nonconference game of the season.
Western Oregon 36, Central Washington 34: Jesse Correa’s 32-yard field goal with 42 seconds left gave the Wolves (2-1) a nonconference win over the Wildcats (1-2) in Monmouth, Oregon.
Central Washington quarterback Jake Nelson threw for 303 yards and two touchdowns, but also had two costly interceptions.
Carroll 33, Rocky Mountain 8: The Saints (2-1, 2-1) won their second straight after beating the Battlin’ Bears (3-1, 2-1) in a Frontier Conference game in Billings, Montana.
