Newton scuffles with DB
Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was involved in a scuffle at training camp practice with cornerback Josh Norman that ended with both players at the bottom of a pile and having to be separated by teammates.
The altercation occurred Monday after Norman made a sliding interception against Newton. Norman got up and began to return the ball toward the opposing end zone, as per the training camp rules established by coach Ron Rivera.
Newton pursued and felt Norman hit him with a stiff arm.
As whistles blew signaling the end of the play, Newton sped up his pursuit of Norman and tackled him near the end zone. The two wrestled on the ground for a few moments as some other players piled on.
An irate Newton got up shouting at Norman, saying “hit me like that again and you’ll know something.”
It’s final year for Smith
Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith says he will retire at the end of the 2015 season, his 15th in the NFL.
The five-time Pro Bowler announced he will walk away from the game after the second season of a three-year contract with Baltimore.
Smith is one of 12 players in league history to record 900 catches, 13,000 receiving yards and 70 touchdown receptions.
Around the league
A severe thunderstorm flooded the Denver Broncos practice fields in Englewood, Colorado, and caused damage to the parking lots and viewing areas at the empty UCHealth Training Center. More than 3 1/2 inches of rain fell in an hour. There weren’t any crowds on hand because the storm struck on the players’ day off. … Still unsure of the status of Tom Brady and with the preseason opener coming up, the New England Patriots released veteran quarterback Matt Flynn and signed Ryan Lindley to replace him as the team’s third-stringer. Flynn signed with the Patriots on June 12, but was on the non-football injury list. He previously played with Green Bay, Seattle, Oakland and Buffalo. Lindley was forced into a starting role for Arizona late last season. He went 45 for 93 for 562 yards with two touchdown passes and four interceptions.
