Busted Nevada fight regulators imposed the maximum penalty Thursday on former UFC champion Anderson Silva for testing positive for steroid use last January. Nevada Athletic Commission Chairman Francisco Aguilar said the 40-year-old Silva was suspended for one year, stripped of his January win over Nick Diaz and fined $380,000.

Injured United States skier Lindsey Vonn has another injury to worry about after fracturing an ankle bone in a training crash in New Zealand. “Unfortunately I crashed today and have a small fracture in my ankle,” Vonn said on Twitter. It is the latest setback for Vonn, who returned from serious leg injuries to break the all-time record for victories on the women’s World Cup last season.

Died Stanley Cup champion, Bob Fillion, who won the Cup with the Montreal Canadiens in 1944 and 1946, has died. He was 94. He finished with 42 goals and 61 assists in 327 games, all for the Canadiens.

• Thoroughbred racing pioneer, John Nerud, who trained the great Dr. Fager and helped create the Breeders’ Cup, has died. He was 102. He died of heart failure at his home in Old Brookville, New York.

Scheduled Boxers Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez agreed to a bout scheduled for Nov. 21 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. The fighters’ camps have spent several months negotiating the HBO pay-per-view bout. It’s the latest chapter in the long-running rivalry between boxers from Puerto Rico and Mexico.

Suspended New York Red Bulls defender Damien Perrinelle was suspended for two games and fined an undisclosed amount by MLS for endangering the safety of an opponent in a 2-0 victory over New York City FC on Sunday night. Parrinelle will sit out games Saturday against Toronto FC and Aug. 26 against the Chicago Fire.

Signed Real Salt Lake has signed Argentinean forward Juan Manuel Martinez as a designated player. The 29-year-old Martinez formerly played for Boca Juniors and Corinthians.
