Ticket Punched
While the majority of motorists won’t see their auto insurance premiums jump after receiving minor moving violations, younger drivers are more susceptible to ticket-fueled rate increases than their senior counterparts. According a study conducted for the website InsuranceQuotes.com in San Francisco, drivers 18-49 years-old are three times more likely to see their insurance premiums rise after receiving a ticket than are drivers 50-64 years-old.
“Younger people have a bad reputation of being risky drivers and typically face additional scrutiny from insurance carriers,” says Laura Adams, the site’s senior industry analyst. “Most carriers check a young driver’s record every six months, but won’t regularly check an older driver’s as these checks can be costly - and older drivers typically are safer drivers.”
Ironically, while new drivers are usually considered the riskiest on the road, the site found that older motorists are actually ticketed more often, with 31 percent of 30- to 49-year-olds being cited for a moving violation in the past five years, compared to 25 percent of 18- to 29-year-olds.
