Wagons, community spirit on parade in Millwood

Our Pick For Local Families

Calling all red wagons.

Saturday is the annual red wagon parade at Millwood Daze.

For the past three years organizers have sought a world record. The bar was raised over the winter: 288 red wagons paraded in a fundraiser for Community Partners of Dallas on Jan. 31, according to the Guinness World Records website. The previous record was 147.

“Every year gets better. We’re going to keep going for it,” said Mollie Dalpae, executive director of Meals on Wheels and Mid-City Senior Center. Millwood Daze is a fundraiser for the organizations.

Dalpae said wagons don’t have to be red, and decorations are encouraged. Family passes to they Spokane County Interstate Fair will be awarded to the owners of the top two decorated wagons.

And, even if a new world record isn’t set this weekend, there’s still plenty of fun to be had during the festival, which runs 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be a 5K family fun run at 9 a.m., the registration fee is $25 and includes a T-shirt. The dachshund race is at 10 a.m. Daylong activities include a vintage motorcycle show and art festival.

At dusk, “The NeverEnding Story” will screen for free at Millwood City Park, 9205 E. Frederick Ave.
