Obituary: Owens, Joan Bickerstaff

OWENS, Joan Bickerstaff May 4, 1932 - August 17, 2015 A private visitation for the family was held August 19, 2015.

Joan passed away from complications from Alzheimer’s.

Joan was born and raised in Oklahoma, later moving with her parents Roy and Clara Bickerstaff to Bellflower, California.

Joan was second youngest of five children.

Joan met and married her husband of 20 years Stan Owens in 1953 in Bellflower.

They are both survived by their four children, Pamela, Tamara, Randy, and Dan, as well as eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

While raising four children, Joan graduated from Whitworth College with a degree in Home Economics.

She substitute taught for the Central Valley School District.

Joan later worked and retired from the Washington State Department of Health and Welfare/Unemployment Office.

She enjoyed working and helping unwed mothers, the unemployed, and those in need.

Joan was a member of Spokane Valley Baptist Church and sang in the choir.

Joan enjoyed various mediums of art from painting to ceramics, sewing, and needle point.

She also enjoyed ballroom dancing and volunteering at the Opera House and the VA. Joan’s earthly journey ended peacefully and comfortably when Jesus called her home on August 17.

Joan celebrated 83 years of life filled with her love of family and friends.

We celebrate her life as she is welcomed home with open arms to her friend, counselor and Savior, her Lord Jesus Christ.

The family wishes to acknowledge all those who cared for our dear mother, The Gardens at Orchard Ridge (formerly Cd’A Homes), Hospice of North Idaho, and Yates Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made in Joan’s name to The Gardens at Orchard Ridge, Hospice of North Idaho, and the Alzheimer’s Association c/o of the McGrane Center, Coeur d’ Alene, ID.
