Cotto, Alvarez finally to face off in Vegas
Boxing: After months of painstaking discussions, Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez appeared together in Hollywood on Monday to announce their WBC middleweight title bout, on Nov. 21 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) had a large fan contingent during their public appearance, and the 25-year-old Mexican star is favored against the 34-year-old Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs).
Kentucky avoids elimination in LLWS
Little League: Eli Burwash scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth inning and Bowling Green, Kentucky, avoided elimination Monday at the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, by beating Taylors, South Carolina, 4-3. Bowling Green will play today against Bonita, California.
• California beats Rhode Island: Jacob Baptista hit a go-ahead grand slam and Levi Mendez struck out 11 as Bonita, California, defeated Cranston, Rhode Island, 10-3 in an elimination game. Baptista’s homer capped a six-run third inning rally.
• Mexico advances past Australia: Mexico scored nine runs in the first inning to eliminate Australia, winning 14-3 in four innings. Damian Garcia, Jorge Armenta and Alberto Bustos all added home runs for Mexicali, which advances to play today against Taiwan.
• Taiwan moves on, knocks off Uganda: Wei Hung Chou pitched a one-hit shutout as Taipei, Taiwan, eliminated Kampala, Uganda. Uganda finished 1-2 in the nation’s second LLWS appearance.
Rockets re-sign Jason Terry
Miscellany: The Houston Rockets re-signed point guard Jason Terry. The 16-year veteran averaged 7 points, 1.9 assists and 1.6 rebounds in 77 games last season. Last year, Terry became the third player in NBA history to make 2,000 career 3-pointers.
• Coaching shakeup for Sun Devils: Arizona State assistant coach Bo Graham has resigned from his father’s staff due to personal reasons, less than two weeks before the Sun Devils’ first game. Graham was entering his third season as running backs coach and fourth overall under head coach Todd Graham.
• Presidents Cup to reduce number of matches: The PGA Tour agreed to reduce the number of matches in the Presidents Cup. In South Korea on Oct. 8-11, there will 18 matches of foursomes and fourballs and 12 singles matches for 30 total points.
• Sagan wins 3rd Vuelta stage, Chaves remains leader: Peter Sagan won a sprint to the line to take the third stage of the Spanish Vuelta in Malaga, Spain. Colombian Esteban Chaves kept the red leader’s jersey, while favorite Chris Froome remained in seventh place at 40 seconds back.
• U.S. beats China in women’s volleyball: The United States beat China 25-23, 25-17, 25-23 at the women’s volleyball World Cup in Matsumoto, Japan. China had only lost one set in its two opening victories, while the Americans were coming off a 3-2 loss to Serbia in its second match on Sunday.
