Area roundup: Gonzaga picks up two victories in its volleyball tournament
Gonzaga won both of its matches Saturday at its Northwest Challenge volleyball tournament played in the Martin Centre, defeating Portland State and Boise State to finish the tournament 2-1.
Gonzaga defeated Portland State 22-25, 25-13, 25-17, 25-19. Savannah Blinn had 19 kills on .361 hitting.
The Bulldogs then beat Boise State 25-20, 22-25, 26-24, 25-20 behind 21 kills on .425 hitting from Jordan Gasser and Blinn’s 17 on .314.
Tenth-ranked Washington won both of its Saturday matches with 3-0 victories over Boise State and Portland State to go undefeated at the event.
• Kyra Holt and McKenna Woodford combined for 31 kills and Washington State (2-1) won its final match at the Radford (Virginia) Invitational with a 25-18, 25-22, 25-21 victory over East Tennessee State. Holt had 17 kills while hitting .250. Woodford hit .241 and had 14 kills.
• Eastern Washington (0-3) lost its final two matches at the Molten Classic in Berkeley, California, losing to host Cal 25-22, 25-17, 25-23 and Nevada 25-21, 25-19, 25-21. Jessica Gilbert had 10 kills and hit .450 in the loss to Cal.
• Idaho (0-2) fell to Oregon State 25-10, 25-19, 25-19 at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Honolulu. Becca Mau had eight kills on .375 hitting for Idaho.
• North Idaho defeated Montana Western 3-1 before getting a forfeit victory over Northwest University at the Red Lion Classic at Lewis-Clark State in Lewiston. The Cardinals went 4-0 in the tournament. NIC’s Brenna Meehan and Brittany Gray were all-tournament picks.
• CC Spokane (1-4) dropped both of its consolation matches at the Chemeketa Preseason Tournament in Salem. The Sasquatch lost to Blue Mountain 25-16, 25-19, 25-16 and Clackamas 25-19, 21-25, 25-18, 25-21.
Women’s soccer
North Idaho scored a 2-1 victory over Tacoma in its opener, part of the “NWAC Friendlies” series of matches, in Springfield, Oregon. Corinne Ariss’ goal in the 56th minute proved to be the winner after teammate Alissa Jolliff scored in the 41st to tie.
• In an NWAC Friendly played in Eugene, CC Spokane and Lane tied 1-1 after the host Titans scored in the 87th minute. Alysha Overland scored four minutes in for CCS in its opener. Emily Busselman made seven saves for the Sasquatch.
Men’s soccer
CC Spokane scored a 2-1 win over Whatcom in an NWAC Friendly played in Springfield, Oregon, with goals from Jonathan Cortez in the 76th minute and Kazuki Tateishi in the 85th.
• In another NWAC Friendly in Springfield, NIC got goals from Hamidou Kante, Jorge Carmona and Irven Perez for a 3-0 victory over Edmonds.
Idaho prep football
• Davon Norris threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to Wyatt Cox and Sandpoint rallied from a 12-point deficit beat Post Falls 20-19 at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow, Idaho.
• In an earlier game at the Kibbie Dome, St. Maries defeated Kellogg 38-7.
• In Spirit Lake, Brandon Hausladen scored from 2 yards to break a tie with two minutes left and Timberlake beat Frenchtown (Montana) 20-14.
