Ex-Tar Heels coach Smith dies at 83
Dean Smith, the North Carolina basketball coaching great who won two national championships, died at age 83.
The retired Hall of Fame coach died “peacefully” at his home in Chapel Hill, N.C., Saturday night, the school said in a statement from Smith’s family. He was with his wife and five children.
Smith coached the Tar Heels from 1961-97. He retired as the winningest coach in the sport with 879 victories. He won NCAA titles in 1982 and 1993.
