Libraries offer holiday crafts

Our Weekly Pick For Families

Spokane Public Libraries are celebrating both Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year with crafts this week.

Branches will have supplies and ideas for making valentine cards today and Saturday.

Also Saturday, there will be supplies for making animals out of hearts, with inspiration from the book “My Heart is Like a Zoo” by Michael Hall. The illustrations in the book feature animals made by layering and combining different sizes and colors of hearts.

“The kids make their own animals – they just take off on an idea,” said Susanne Miller, youth services librarian at the South Hill branch.

And families can mark the year of the ram – or sheep or goat, the Chinese character is the same – by making paper lanterns to light their way into the new year.

“It’s a fun, easy craft,” Miller said. “You can do nice bright colors, especially red for good luck.”

She makes samples of the various crafts to give people an idea of the end result.

“The kids always surprise me because what they make is always so much more terrific.”
