Shelved Forward Carmelo Anthony will have surgery on his left knee and miss the rest of the season. New York Knicks President of Basketball Operations Phil Jackson said Anthony could be ready to play again in 4-6 months.

Added Forward Amare Stoudemire joined the Dallas Mavericks two days after the Knicks let him out of his contract. Stoudemire has career averages of 20 points and 8.2 rebounds. He averaged 12 points and 24 minutes for the Knicks.

Reinjured The New Orleans Pelicans say point guard Jrue Holiday reaggravated his lower right leg injury and is not scheduled to be re-evaluated for an additional three weeks. Holiday, who has averaged 15.2 points and 7.1 assists in 37 games this season, has not played since Jan. 12, missing 16 games since.

Cleared The Detroit Tigers say Miguel Cabrera has been cleared for hitting and throwing and could be ready for Opening Day as he recovers from surgery on his right foot in Lakeland, Florida. The first baseman had surgery in late October to remove bone spurs in his ankle and repair a stress fracture in his foot.

Announced Right-hander Masahiro Tanaka probably will throw his first bullpen session of the year today at the New York Yankees’ minor league complex in Tampa, Florida. Tanaka missed 2 1/2 months last year while rehabilitating a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He returned for two late-September starts.

Signed Right-hander Matt Lindstrom agreed to terms on a minor-league contract with the Los Angeles Angels. He spent last season with the Chicago White Sox, where he went 2-2 with a 5.03 ERA in 35 games.

Defeated The Colorado Rockies defeated catcher Wilin Rosario in salary arbitration. Rosario was given a $2.8 million salary instead of his $3.3 million request. Rosario hit .267 with 13 homers and 54 RBIs for the Rockies last year.

Canceled The New York Racing Association canceled today’s races at Aqueduct in anticipation of frigid temperatures and strong wind gusts. The latest cancellation is the 12th this winter at Aqueduct. Racing is scheduled to resume on Friday.

Named The European Tour announced Darren Clarke was selected as the captain of the European team for the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine. Miguel Angel Jimenez and Thomas Bjorn were also candidates for the role.
