Obituary: Hughes, Berneal Shepard

Age 87

HUGHES, Berneal Shepard (Age 87) Passed away December 31, 2014 in Spokane, Washington.

She was born in Four Lakes, Washington on February 17, 1927 to Herman and Savallah Willms.

She is survived by sons, Dan (Rollene) Shepard of Ridgefield, WA, and Timm (Marie) Shepard of Cheney, WA; step-daughter, Lynda Allison of Denver, CO; sister, Beverly (Lindy) Lucas of Cheney, WA; sister-in-law, Jeannine Henderson of Spokane, WA; aunt, Evelyn Willms; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; many loving step-family, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 50 years, Charles Shepard and her husband of 10 years, Clarence Hughes.

Berneal was a graduate from Cheney High School and was employed at various secretarial positions at Cheney School District, Betz Elementary, University of Washington and later retired from Spokane Falls Community College.

She enjoyed traveling to many places in the United States and Europe to include Hawaii, Alaska and Mexico.

Upon retirement, Berneal enjoyed spending winter months in Arizona.

She also enjoyed watching sports on TV with family, and attending all her son’s sports games in the early years.

She loved arts and crafts and took many classes on the subject, enjoyed her flower gardens wherever she lived, and summers at the lake cabin in Deer Lake for over 40 years.

She was a charter member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Cheney, a member of Friends of Cheney Historical Museum, and the Cheney Diakonia Club.

Also a past president of the Cheney American Legion Auxiliary, a former member of Cheney Tilicum Club and the Spokane Curling Club.
