Outlook: The sixth-ranked Zags return to the McCarthey Athletic Center for the first time since Texas Southern visited Dec. 15. The Dons, picked fourth in the preseason poll, have dropped nine of their last 13, including a 99-68 home loss to BYU last Saturday. “I question how tough we are,” coach Rex Walters told the San Francisco Chronicle. “We’ve got to get tougher.” Forwards Mark Tollefsen (15.1 ppg) and Kruize Pinkins (15.0) lead an offense that averages 71.6 points. USF has tried five different starting lineups, most recently inserting freshman Devin Watson at point guard. Guards Brandon Clark (15.7 ppg) and Jared Brownridge (14.1) pace Santa Clara.

Perkins update
Freshman point guard Josh Perkins, who suffered a broken jaw Nov. 26 against Georgia and had surgery Dec. 9, had his wires removed and he’s able to eat semi-solid foods.
Perkins can do some weight-lifting and conditioning. He said it hasn’t been determined when he can return to practice.
