WCC roundup: Pepperdine holds off BYU
Stacy Davis came off the bench for the first time this season and responded with 23 points and eight rebounds to lead the Pepperdine Waves to a 67-61 win over the BYU Cougars on Thursday in Provo, Utah.
The Waves never trailed and made all the clutch plays after the Cougars cut a double-figure deficit to one with 2:03 left.
BYU had a chance to take the lead but Tyler Haws, who led BYU with 26 points, missed a jumper at 1:06.
After Davis made two free throws at 41 seconds, the Cougars, who were 1-for-12 from 3-point range in the second half, missed. Jeremy Major made two free throws at 23 seconds and then got a breakaway layup for a 66-59 lead.
San Diego 59, Loyola Marymount 50: Johnny Dee scored 18, Chris Anderson added 14 points and Jito Kok had a school-record eight blocks as the Toreros held off the Lions in San Diego.
Neither team led by more than four in the second half until San Diego went on a 13-0 run to lead 52-43 on Dee’s jumper with 2:28 left. Anderson sparked the rally with a pair of 3-pointers.
Portland 78, Santa Clara 61: Alec Wintering scored 26 points on 8-for-13 shooting and sank all nine of his shots from the free-throw line to lead the Pilots past the Broncos in Portland, Oregon.
Gabe Taylor and Jason Todd added 12 points apiece for Portland, which shot 53 percent from the floor.
