Eastern Washington Hall of Fame member, track star Ron Chadwick, dies

Record-breaking hurdler Ron Chadwick, who was the second track and field athlete to be inducted into the Eastern Washington University Athletics Hall of Fame, died Wednesday in Spokane.

Chadwick, who was 83, was selected as the outstanding performer at the 1954 NAIA Track and Field Championships, when he won the NAIA 120-yard high hurdles and 220-yard low hurdles titles.

His times of 14.6 and 24.1 seconds in the preliminaries equaled meet records. He ran wind-aided times of 14.3 and 23.8 in the finals.

Chadwick, from Emmett, Idaho, averaged 24 points per meet in 1954, helping Eastern extend its dual meet win streak to 37.

He also played football for three seasons, helping Eastern go 6-2 in 1953.

Chadwick went on to spend 40 years in the sporting goods industry.
