In brief: Valley celebrating unveiling of Appleway Trail today

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Valley is celebrating the unveiling of the Appleway Trail from 10 a.m. to noon today.

Meet Mayor Dean Grafos, city council members, city staff and project managers at the trail’s University Plaza entrance, at the intersection of University Road and Appleway Boulevard.

The official ceremony is followed by a 1-mile fun walk headed east from University Road to Bowdish Road and back to the plaza.

Displays by local organizations and groups will be set up along the way.

The first 100 fun walk participants may receive giveaways.

Parking is available at the STA transit center at Fourth Avenue and University Road, or at Spokane Valley Tech on University Road, just north of the trail entrance.

Six graduate from Youth Academy

Six local students recently graduated from the Washington Youth Academy, which seeks to provide a highly disciplined, safe and professional learning environment for at-risk youth through an intensive 22-week residential phase at the school in Bremerton.

The graduates are Devon Hutton and Christine Ellenwood, of Spokane; Austin Allen, Joshua Matriciano and Andrew Toft, of Spokane Valley; and Josiah Phillips, of Medical Lake.

Lodging tax panel seeking applicants

SPOKANE VALLEY – Applications are being sought to fill an opening on the Spokane Valley Lodging Tax Advisory Committee.

The five-member committee makes recommendations for disbursing the lodging tax to efforts that bring visitors and tourism to the city.

The opening is for a member of an organization qualified to receive funding from the lodging tax. The term runs through Dec. 31. Members are not paid.

Applications are available at City Hall or at www.spokanevalley.org/volunteer, and must be submitted by Aug. 7 to cbainbridge@spokanevalley.org, by fax to (509) 688-0194, or delivered to Spokane Valley City Hall, Attn: City Clerk Chris Bainbridge, 11707 E. Hearing tonight on dog park plan

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Spokane Valley Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a planning meeting for a proposed pocket dog park in Valley Mission Park at 6 p.m. tonight at CenterPlace, 2426 N. Discovery Place.

Participants in tonight’s meeting will be asked for input on location, design and amenities.

There’s a $75,000 budget for the park this year.
