Lakeside grad wins Gates Scholar full-ride to Whitworth
Haley Abrahamson-Fernandez, a recent graduate of Lakeside High School in Nine Mile Falls, has received a full-ride scholarship to Whitworth University through the Gates Millennium Scholar program.
The program was established in 1999 and is funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This year, the program awarded 1,000 scholarships.
Six graduate from Youth Academy
Six local students recently graduated from the Washington Youth Academy, which seeks to provide a highly disciplined, safe and professional learning environment for at-risk youth through an intensive 22-week residential phase at the school in Bremerton.
The graduates are Devon Hutton and Christine Ellenwood, of Spokane; Austin Allen, Joshua Matriciano and Andrew Toft, of Spokane Valley; and Josiah Phillips, of Medical Lake.
Shadle student wins scholarship
Shadle Park’s Maria Vigil won a $1,000 scholarship from the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1439 for her response to an essay prompt about what the terms “just cause” and “seniority” mean and why they are important in the work place.
The union awarded four other scholarships to students from around Eastern Washington.
NW Christian hosts football camp
Northwest Christian Schools will hold a Crusader Youth Football Skills Camp for athletes entering kindergarten through eighth grade Monday-Wednesday.
This is a no pads/non-contact camp designed to introduce young athletes to football and develop existing skills. The camp costs $30 per athlete. Campers are asked to bring their own football, cleats and water bottle, and all participants receive a camp T-shirt.
