In brief: Karrie Webb, Marina Alex share early lead at rain-halted U.S. Women’s Open

Golf: Veteran Karrie Webb and second-year LPGA Tour player Marina Alex both shot 4-under-par 66s Thursday to share the early lead on a wet and windblown first day at the U.S. Women’s Open.

The 40-year-old Webb reeled off four birdies on her second nine holes, while Alex birdied three of her last five before the first round was suspended. An early evening storm packing strong winds, lightning and heavy rain pounded Lancaster (Pennsylvania) Country Club.

The stoppage came with 55 golfers still on the course.

Spieth stumbles out the gate: Justin Thomas and Nicholas Thompson were tied for the lead at 8 under in the opening round of the John Deere Classic, while Jordan Spieth languished far behind.

Thomas and Thompson each shot a 63 at the TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois, finishing eight strokes ahead of Masters and U.S. Open champion Spieth.

Spokane native Alex Prugh shot a 68.

McDonald charged with domestic violence

Football: Former San Francisco 49er defensive tackle Ray McDonald was charged with domestic violence, false imprisonment, child endangerment and violating a court order in connection with allegations he assaulted his ex-fiancee while she held their 2-month-old child, prosecutors said.

McDonald was also charged with child endangerment and violating a court order, the Santa Clara County district attorney’s office said. The false imprisonment charge is a felony while the other counts are misdemeanors.

He was arraigned in Santa Clara County but did not enter a plea. He is due back in court in August.

Alabama-FSU to open 2017: Alabama and Florida State will meet in the 2017 season opener at Atlanta’s new stadium.

The Sept. 2 matchup will be the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.

Crafton earns 9th career NASCAR Truck Series win

MISCELLANY: Matt Crafton earned his ninth career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory at Kentucky Speedway in a race stopped early because of a wreck that damaged the catch fence.

NASCAR called the race with five laps to go after Ben Kennedy’s truck clipped and bent portions of the catch fence in Turn 1. Kennedy was not injured in the crash.

Crafton, the two-time defending series champion, had passed Erik Jones for the lead on a restart with six laps to go. Jones finished second, followed by Ryan Blaney, Daniel Suarez and Timothy Peters.

Injuries cut Villopoto’s career short: Six-time motocross champion Ryan Villopoto is retiring from competitive racing, ending one of most successful careers in the sport’s history.

The 26-year-old from Fortuna, California, said in a statement that he is still in severe discomfort after a crash in Italy this April left him with multiple tailbone fractures and compressed disks in his lower back.

Ayala Jr. died of heroin overdose: An autopsy confirmed that boxer Tony Ayala Jr. died of a heroin overdose.

The Bexar County (Texas) Medical Examiner’s Office revealed the cause of death on Thursday. The report also cited an enlarged heart as another significant finding. San Antonio police had suspected a heroin overdose killed the 52-year-old former middleweight contender, whose body was found at his family’s gym on May 12.

Judge adjourns extradition hearing for Warner: Former FIFA vice president Jack Warner has won more time in his fight to avoid being extradited from Trinidad to the United States to face corruption charges.

Chief Magistrate Marcia Ayers-Ceasar set a new hearing date of July 27 in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad.
