In brief: Jaguars kicker Josh Scobee leads celebrity golf

Golf: Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Josh Scobee matched the event record with 33 points Saturday to take a one-point lead in the American Century Championship in Stateline, Nevada.

Scobee eagled the par-5 16th and had six birdies and two bogeys for a 6-under 66 at Edgewood Tahoe. He had 57 points after two rounds at Edgewood Tahoe in the modified Stableford event where players receive six points for eagle, three for birdie, one for par, none for bogey and minus-2 for double bogey or worse.

Former pitcher Mark Mulder was second. He eagled the par-5 18th – hitting his approach to 6 inches – in a round of 70 for his second straight 26-point day.

Former pitcher Eric Gagne was third after a 29-point round. He had six birdies and one bogey in a 67. Recently retired tennis player Mardy Fish was fourth at 49 after a 27-point round.

Charles Barkley, set for hip-replacement surgery next month, remained 90th in the 91-player field at minus-60. Kim Alexis was last at minus-66. They have both failed to make a par or birdie in 36 holes.

Defending champion Mark Rypien of Spokane was in 29th place with 25 points.

• Barnes, Piercy lead Barbasol: Ricky Barnes and Scott Piercy each shot 6-under 65 to share the third-round lead in the PGA Tour’s inaugural Barbasol Championship in Opelika, Alabama.

Barnes and Piercy reached 13-under 200 on Grand National’s Lake Course.

Piercy birdied four of the first five holes. Barnes had birdies on holes 16 and 17 and is seeking his first PGA Tour win in 202 events.

Second-round co-leaders Whee Kim and Mark Hensby were among five players a shot back. Both shot 68 in the event for players who failed to make the British Open field. Jason Gore had a 63, Will Wilcox a 65, and Emiliano Grillo a 67 to join the group at 12 under.

Spokane native Alex Prugh was at 7-under 206 after shooting a 66.

Ha Na Jang in front at rain-plagued Marathon: Ha Na Jang shot a 2-under 69, leaving her a stroke ahead with one round left in the LPGA Tour’s rain-plagued Marathon Classic in Sylvania, Ohio.

The South Korean player had an 11-under 202 total at Highland Meadows. Fighting back pain, she opened with rounds of 66 and 67 and has only two bogeys over the first 54 holes.

Play was delayed for 1 hour, 59 minutes in the afternoon. Delays Friday forced 54 players to complete the second round Saturday morning.

South Korea’s Q Baek was second. She birdied the final hole for a 68.

Banned FIFA official pleads not guilty

Soccer: A former top FIFA official pleaded not guilty to racketeering and bribery charges in a corruption case that has sent shock waves through the soccer world.

Jeffrey Webb posted a $10 million bond at his arraignment in federal court in New York. He surrendered three passports.

The 50-year-old Webb was among seven FIFA officials detained in Switzerland.

The rest of the officials are fighting extradition.

Pele has back surgery: Soccer legend Pele, 74, has successfully undergone back surgery for nerve root decompression and his postoperative recovery is satisfactory, the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo said.

Mauresmo inducted into Hall of Fame

Tennis: Amelie Mauresmo was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island.

Joining Mauresmo were six-time Paralympic medalist David Hall of Australia and Nancy Jeffett, elected in the contributor category.

• Karlovic, Ram advance to final at Newport: Second-seeded Ivo Karlovic advanced to the finals of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, Rhode Island, for the second straight year, defeating fourth-seeded Jack Sock 7-6 (3), 6-4.

The 36-year-old Karlovic of Croatia will face American Rajeev Ram, a semifinal winner over Australian John-Patrick Smith 6-4, 7-6 (4).

• Belgium, Argentina reach Davis Cup semis: Belgium and Argentina set up a Davis Cup semifinal in September, while Britain took the lead against France, and Australia stayed alive in the quarterfinals.

Belgium reached its first semis since 1999 when Ruben Bemelmans and Kimmer Coppejans won the doubles for an unbeatable 3-0 lead over Canada on clay in Ostend.

Argentina will travel to Belgium in three months after putting away Serbia 3-0.

On the grass at Queen’s Club in London, brothers Andy and Jamie Murray defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Nicolas Mahut 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-1 for Britain to lead France 2-1.

Australia avoided defeat on its soil against Kazakhstan when Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Groth beat Andrey Golubev and Aleksandr Nedovyesov 6-4, 7-6 (4), 6-2.

American Pharoah works at Del Mar

Horse racing: Triple Crown champion American Pharoah had his first workout at Del Mar in California in preparation for his next start in the Haskell Invitational in New Jersey.

The 3-year-old colt ran 6 furlongs in 1:11.40 under jockey Martin Garcia about 90 minutes after a rare thunderstorm passed through the area north of San Diego. It was the fastest of 12 workouts at the distance.

American Pharoah is expected to start in the Haskell on Aug. 2 at Monmouth Park.

• Sheer Drama takes Delaware Handicap: Harold Queen’s Sheer Drama challenged pacesetter Frivolous in the second turn and shook free late for a 2-length victory in the Grade 1 $750,00 Delaware Handicap at Delaware Park in Stanton.

Wiggle It Jiggleit wins Meadowlands Pace: Wiggle It Jiggleit took the lead on the backstretch and raced to a 1 3/4-length victory over Dude’s The Man in the $706,000 Crawford Farms Meadowlands Pace in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Montrell Teague, 24, pumped his fist about 20 yards before the finish line in becoming the youngest driver to win the signature event at the Meadowlands.

Toronto signs free-agent Biyombo

NBA: The Toronto Raptors signed Bismack Biyombo, a free agent who played last NBA season with the Charlotte Hornets.

The 6-foot-9 Biyombo is a center-forward who averaged 4.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 64 games last season with Charlotte. He ranked 17th in the NBA in blocks.
