Seahawks safety Earl Thomas’ status remains a mystery
An ESPN report Thursday stated that the status of Seahawks free safety Earl Thomas, who is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, for the beginning of training camp and possibly the beginning of the regular season remains uncertain.
Whether that is anything different from what already had been known, however, also is somewhat unclear.
The ESPN report quoted Thomas as saying “I’m unsure about everything at this point. I will find out more when I go back to Seattle on (July) 30th when I take my physical.”
That was the only quote in the story from Thomas, and it’s unclear if Thomas was merely taking a wait-and-see approach in his response or indicating that anything has changed. Players have not been around the team since the end of minicamp in mid-June.
At that time, coach Pete Carroll said Thomas’ rehab from surgery to repair a torn labrum suffered in the NFC Championship Game against Green Bay was on track but added that the team would be cautious in bringing him back.
“He’s really excited about where he is and his ability to do all the stuff and run around,” Carroll said. “They just want to wait all the time that they can.”
Carroll had given a similar update during OTAs in May, during which Thomas donned a helmet and got on the field for a few non-contact position drills.
Thomas, who has not missed a game in his NFL career and has a streak of 80 consecutive starts, had surgery Feb. 24. Rehab for the surgery he had typically takes six to eight months. Seattle’s first regular-season game is Sept 13.
