Obituary: Mclarren, Dorothy Mae

Age 88

McLARREN, Dorothy Mae (Age 88) Dorothy Mae Smyth grew up in rural Montana.

She was Valedictorian of her high school and went on to study nursing at Whitworth College and Deaconess Hospital.

There she met a pre-medical student named George McLarren, the man she was to marry.

Dorothy worked as a nurse while George went to medical school, and soon they began a family: first Sandy, then Paul, then twins Toni and Tari, and finally Jan. After George’s residency, they settled in Spokane, Washington, where Dorothy devoted herself to homemaking and rearing her five children.

And what an amazing mother she was!

Whether fixing camp meals, lacing ski boots, or encouraging us musically, her upbeat enthusiasm was infectious.

She turned her own creativity to painting in oils, and her family and friends have treasured her artwork.

Dorothy was for years an active member of Opportunity Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder and as a Deacon.

And she was a tireless promoter of Whitworth University, serving on its Board of Trustees and encouraging many young people to get the Whitworth experience.

Dorothy delighted in being a grandmother (of six) and great-grandmother (of four, going on five).

Throughout her later years, Dorothy remained involved in her family, community, in Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church, and Whitworth University.

A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held at Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, August 19 at 3:30 pm.
