GOLF: Donald Trump’s show-stealing arrival at the Women’s British Open in Turnberry, Scotland, Thursday upstaged Hyo-Joo Kim’s latest strong start in a major championship.

The 18-year-old South Korean player was midway through a 7-under 65 in the first round when Trump, the American presidential candidate, landed in a private helicopter to begin a two-day visit at the tournament at his Turnberry resort in western Scotland.

The fourth-ranked Kim, who shot a first-round 61 in winning the Evian Championship in her major championship debut last year, had a one-stroke lead over Lydia Ko and Cristie Kerr.

Top-ranked Inbee Park began her bid to complete a career sweep of the majors by shooting 69.

Woods shoots 68, five shots back: Tiger Woods got back to shooting in the 60s. But he didn’t make it look easy.

Woods bogeyed three of his first four holes in the Quicken Loans National in Gainesville, Virginia, then ran off five birdies in six holes around the turn for a 3-under 68. That left him five shots back of leaders Retief Goosen and Ryo Ishikawa at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club.

Woods says he stayed patient after his early struggles. He says it’s the first time he’s turned a bad round into a good one since the Masters in April.

Woods won the tournament in 2009 and 2012 at Congressional in Maryland. The last of his 79 PGA Tour victories was nearly two years ago, and he has plummeted to 266th in the world.

Spokane native Alex Prugh shot a 72.

Brady suit transferred to New York court

NFL: Tom Brady’s lawsuit against the NFL in which he wants his four-game suspension overturned will be heard in New York instead of Minnesota.

Brady and the players’ union filed their suit in Minnesota. But the NFL already had filed papers in New York, moments after announcing that Commissioner Roger Goodell upheld the suspension for Brady’s involvement in the use of underinflated footballs in the AFC championship game.

U.S. District Judge Richard Kyle, based in Minnesota, ordered the transfer.

The judge wrote that he “sees little reason for this action to have been commenced in Minnesota at all.”

He noted that Brady plays in Massachusetts, the union is headquartered in Washington and the NFL in New York, Kyle added that “the arbitration proceedings took place in New York and the award was issued in New York.”

1860s card fetches $179,000 in auction

MISCELLANY: A circa 1860s Brooklyn Atlantics team baseball card that’s been in the same family for over 150 years has fetched over $179,000 at auction.

The pre-Civil War baseball card was owned by Florence Sasso of Great Barrington, Massachusetts. It shows her great-great-uncle Archibald McMahon, an outfielder for the squad, pictured with eight of his teammates in bib-style shirts and two gentlemen in suits.

Auction organizers say it was purchased by an anonymous collector from the West Coast.

The Atlantics were a founding member of the National Association of Base Ball Players — the sport’s first organized league that held the championship from 1859 through 1861.

Eight-seed advance to Swiss Open quarterfinals: All eight seeds have reached the Swiss Open quarterfinals in Gstaad, Switzerland, making the clay-court tournament the first on the ATP circuit to achieve that feat in six years.

Sixth-seeded Joao Sousa of Portugal saved three match points to preserve the record, going on to beat Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan.

The last tournament where the quarterfinals bracket went with seeding was in Montreal in August 2009, according to the ATP.

American Pharoah favorite at Monmouth Park: Triple Crown winner American Pharoah is the overwhelming 1-5 favorite in a field of eight 3-year-olds for Sunday’s $1.75 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park.

This will be American Pharoah’s first race since he swept the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes and became the 12th Triple Crown winner and first in 37 years.

If American Pharoah is sent off at 1-5, it would match the record for biggest favorite in a Haskell. The others sent off at those odds were Holy Bull in 1994 and Big Brown in 2008.
