Arizona Wildcats hire baseball coach

Arizona has hired Jay Johnson as its baseball coach, replacing the retired Andy Lopez. Arizona athletic director Greg Byrne announced the school’s hiring of Johnson on Sunday night. Johnson was the coach at Nevada the last two seasons, leading the Wolf Pack to a 72-42 record. Nevada won its first Mountain West Conference regular-season title this year, but was not selected for the 64-team NCAA Tournament. He previously was the associate head coach at the University of San Diego for eight seasons. Lopez, 61, retired on May 25, ending a 14-year stint with the Wildcats that included the 2012 College World Series title. – AP
