Gators’ 11-run inning ties record in win
College World Series: Florida scored 11 runs in the fourth inning to tie a College World Series record, and defeated Miami 15-3 in Omaha, Nebraska, sending the Hurricanes’ to the most lopsided loss in their long and proud postseason history.
The Gators’ outburst broke open a surprisingly sloppy game and ended with Florida having turned a 2-1 deficit into a 10-run lead on nine hits off Andrew Suarez and two relievers.
Florida (50-16) advanced to a Bracket 1 winners game against Virginia on Monday night. Miami (49-16) and Arkansas will play an elimination game that afternoon.
Logan Shore (10-6) scattered seven hits and struck out six in five innings for the win.
• Towns’ double leads Virginia past Arkansas: Kenny Towns hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the eighth inning after Daniel Pinero stole second and third base, and Virginia opened the College World Series with a 5-3 victory over Arkansas.
The Cavaliers (40-22), a No. 3 regional seed and the lowest seed to make it to Omaha, improved to 6-0 in the NCAA Tournament.
Arkansas (40-24) tied it at 3 in the fifth on Andrew Benintendi’s nation-leading 20th home run.
Owen, Gomez take lead at St. Jude
Golf: Englishman Greg Owen and Fabian Gomez of Argentina each shot a 3-under 67 to share a one-stroke lead after 54 holes at the St. Jude Classic in Memphis, Tennessee.
The wind kept everyone guessing from shot to shot on a hectic day at TPC Southwind where as many as six players had a piece of the lead at some point during the third round.
Owen, looking for his first PGA Tour title in his 214th event, had four birdies.
Spokane native Alex Prugh is tied for 47th at even par after shooting a 70.
• Langer coasts at Senior Players Championship: Bernhard Langer shot a 4-under 67 in the third round of the Senior Players Championship in Belmont, Massachusetts, to open an eight-stroke lead heading into the final day.
Russ Cochran was even for the day and in second in the third Champions Tour major of the year at 8 under. Langer is trying to become the first golfer to defend his title in the Senior Players Championship since Arnold Palmer in 1984-85.
• Inbee Park leads after third round at Westchester: Two-time defending champion Inbee Park shot a 7-under 66 to overtake fellow South Korean Sei Young Kim for the lead after three rounds of the KPMG Women’s PGA championship in Harrison, New York.
Kim, a rookie who came into the round with a one-stroke lead, shot a 69. The two had battled all afternoon and went into the final hole tied at 13-under par. Park made her seventh birdie of the day on 18, and Kim missed a 4-foot putt for par.
Nadal, Troicki in Mercedes Cup final
Tennis: Top-seeded Rafael Nadal will play Viktor Troicki of Serbia in the final of the grass-court Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, Germany.
Nadal defeated Gael Monfils of France 6-3, 6-4 before Troicki overcame the second-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia 6-3, 6-7 (1), 7-6.
Nadal saved all four break points he faced and converted two of his own to beat the fourth-seeded Monfils.
• Bencic beats Jankovic to reach Topshelf Open final:
Swiss teenager Belinda Bencic remains on course for her first career title after beating veteran Jelena Jankovic 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals of the grass-court Topshelf Open in ’s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.
Bencic next faces fifth-seeded Camila Giorgi of Italy, also chasing her first career title after easily beating Kiki Bertens 6-2, 6-4.
In men’s play, second-seeded David Goffin of Belgium beat Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller 7-6 (4), 6-4.
Charges dismissed in WNBA case
Miscellany: Glory Johnson’s attorney says a Maricopa (Arizona) County Judge has granted a motion to dismiss charges against his client for her role in a fight with fellow WNBA All-Star and then-fiancee Brittney Griner.
Johnson and Griner were arrested on April 22 at their home in Goodyear, Arizona, a suburb of Phoenix, on misdemeanor charges of assault and disorderly conduct.
Griner plays for the WNBA defending champion Phoenix Mercury, and Johnson plays for the Tulsa Shock. However, Johnson says she’s pregnant and will sit out this season.
• Froome wins stage at Criterium du Dauphine: Chris Froome sent out a strong message three weeks before the Tour de France by winning the toughest mountain stage of cycling’s Criterium du Dauphine race in dominant fashion in Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc, France.
American rider Tejay van Garderen took the race leader’s yellow jersey from overnight leader Vincenzo Niabli. But the seventh stage – featuring five category 1 climbs – belonged to Froome, the 2013 Tour champion.
• Noble Bird wins Stephen Foster Handicap: Long shot Noble Bird overtook Paganol in the far turn and held off favorite Lea by a neck to win the $500,000 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.
The winner earned an automatic berth in this fall’s Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland.
• Heavyweight boxer Wilder remains unbeaten: Deontay Wilder (34-0) successfully defended his WBC heavyweight title with a ninth-round knockout of Eric Molina (23-3) in Birmingham, Alabama.
Also on the card, Jose Pedraza (20-0) claimed the vacant IBF junior lightweight title with a unanimous decision over Andrey Klimov (19-2).
