Canada ties Netherlands, advances
Substitute Kirsten Van De Ven scored in the 87th minute and the Netherlands earned a 1-1 draw with host Canada at the Women’s World Cup on Monday in Montreal.
Canada still finished first in Group A with a win and two draws and will begin single-game knockout play Sunday in Vancouver against an opponent still to be determined.
Ashley Lawrence scored early for Canada, but the Dutch (1-1-1) were a threat all night with their counterattacking game and got the equalizer with three minutes left in regular time.
Coach John Herdman made four lineup changes looking for offense from a Canadian team whose only goal in the opening two games was on a penalty.
Canada had the early pressure and Lawrence got a goal 10 minutes in on a play that started with a throw-in deep in Netherlands territory. The ball deflected to Sophie Schmidt, who slipped it to Lawrence for a shot that went in off goalkeeper Loes Geurts’ knee.
China 2, New Zealand 2: Wang Shanshan scored on a perfectly timed header and China (1-1-1) benefited from a questionable called penalty to earn a draw against New Zealand (0-2-1) in Winnipeg, Manitoba and advance to the knockout stage.
Germany 4, Thailand 0: Also at Winnipeg, Lena Petermann scored twice and top-ranked Germany (2-0-1) trounced Thailand (1-2) to advance to the round of 16.
Norway 3, Ivory Coast 1: Ada Hegerberg scored twice to secure a berth for Norway (2-1-0) in the knockouts with a win over Ivory Coast (0-3) in Moncton, New Brunswick.
