In brief: Alex Lange helps LSU over Fullerton

College World Series: Alex Lange pitched his second complete game in three starts, allowing only three base runners, and LSU knocked Cal State Fullerton out of the College World Series with a 5-3 win in Omaha, Nebraska.

The Tigers (54-11), the No. 2 national seed and the No. 1 team in the major polls, will play Thursday against TCU in an elimination game.

• Vanderbilt knocks off TCU : Zander Wiel’s home run leading off the seventh inning broke up Alex Young’s no-hit bid, Philip Pfeifer and Kyle Wright combined on a five-hitter and the Commodores defeated TCU 1-0.

The defending national champion Commodores (49-19) earned two days off and would have to be beaten twice by either TCU (50-14) or LSU to be denied a second straight trip to the best-of-three finals.

Padres tap Murphy as interim manager

MLB: The San Diego Padres picked Triple-A manager Pat Murphy to serve as the big league club’s interim manager for the rest of the season, a day after firing Bud Black.

Murphy, 56, has been with the Padres organization since 2010 and has managed their Triple-A affiliate in El Paso, Texas, the last three seasons.

Black, who was in his ninth season as manager, had a 649-713 record and never took San Diego to the postseason.

• Brewers broadcaster Bob Uecker hit by ball: Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Uecker was hospitalized in Milwaukee on Monday after he was hit in the head by a baseball during batting practice.

Uecker was hit by a pop-up prior to the Brewers game against Kansas City. The 81-year-old broadcaster worked the first six innings of the game and started feeling dizzy. He did not work Tuesday either.

Seahawks sign backup QB T. Jackson

NFL: Seattle officially signed QB Tarvaris Jackson, giving them a proven veteran behind starter Russell Wilson.

Jackson was Seattle’s primary starter in 2011, going 7-7 in games he played.

• Bryant no-show for Cowboys minicamp: Dez Bryant was a no-show for the start of the Dallas Cowboys mandatory offseason minicamp in Irving, Texas.

Bryant has not signed his franchise tag, and there is only a month before the deadline for the Pro Bowl receiver to work out a long-term deal or play this season for $12.8 million.

Nation’s winningest prep coach retires

Miscellany: Summerville (South Carolina) High School coach John McKissick announced his retirement. The 88-year-old won 621 football games and 10 state titles during 63 seasons.

The National Federation of State High School Associations says McKissick’s victories are the most ever.

• Australian running legend Ron Clarke dies: Ron Clarke, Australia’s greatest middle distance runner and the man who lit the cauldron at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956, has died at the age of 78 in Gold Coast, Australia.

Clarke set 17 world records, including 12 during a 44-day tour of Europe in 1965. He competed at the 1964 Tokyo and 1968 Mexico City Olympics.
