In brief: Virginia victory forces Game 3 in College World Series finals
Surprise starter Adam Haseley and Josh Sborz combined on a shutout, senior utility man Thomas Woodruff drove in two runs, and the Cavaliers defeated Vanderbilt 3-0 in Omaha, Nebraska, to force a winner-take-all game in the College World Series.
For the second year in a row, these two teams will go the distance in the best-of-three finals. Vanderbilt (51-20) will be playing for a second straight national title today. Virginia (43-24) will be looking for its first.
Haseley, the Cavaliers’ regular center fielder, hadn’t pitched since May 23. The freshman gave coach Brian O’Connor all he could have hoped for, working into the sixth inning for his longest outing and turning over a scoreless game to Sborz (7-2).
Virginia broke through against Vandy starter Phil Pfeifer (6-5) for three unearned runs in the sixth after he had retired the first two batters.
Beijing says snow no problem for 2022 bid
Olympics: Beijing is offering extra assurances that it will have no problem providing plenty of good quality snow for the skiing events if it wins the right to host the 2022 Winter Olympics.
With a little more than a month left before the games are awarded, the bid committee assembled a panel of ski industry experts to talk up the conditions in the winter sports center at Chongli where the downhill, freestyle and other events would be held.
While the industry there relies heavily on man-made snow, veteran resort designer Wei Qinghua said the area’s cold, dry winters are well suited to grooming and maintaining world-class slopes.
Beijing is competing against Almaty, Kazakhstan. The IOC will select the host city on July 31 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
• Paris becomes 4th city to join race for 2024 Games: The French Olympic Committee has announced that Paris is bidding for the 2024 Summer Games.
The French capital joins Rome, Boston and Hamburg as declared bidders, with Budapest expected to join them.
The deadline for submission of bids is Sept. 15. The IOC will select the host city in 2017.
Paris hosted the Olympics in 1900 and 1924. It bid unsuccessfully for the 1992, 2008 and 2012 Games.
• Budapest city council backs proposed 2024 bid: The Budapest city council has voted overwhelmingly to back a bid for the 2024 Olympics.
The project still needs approval from the Hungarian government and parliament.
Budapest Mayor Istvan Tarlos said Tuesday that “Budapest can only be a winner” because hosting the Olympics would speed up the city’s development.
The city council voted 25-1 in favor of the proposal, with one abstention. The Hungarian Olympic Committee voted in favor of a bid on June 10.
NHL planning 3-on-3 overtime next season
Miscellany: The league’s general managers and the NHL Players’ Association agreed Tuesday to change its regular-season overtime period from four-on-four hockey to three-on-three.
The Board of Governors still must approve the change when it meets in Las Vegas today.
A shootout will still take place if games remain tied after five minutes of three-on-three play, but the change is expected to reduce the number of shootouts.
The NHL began playing four-on-four overtime in 1999, and it added the shootout in 2005.
The Board also will consider a recommendation to allow coaches to challenge goalie interference and offside goals.
• Top seeded Ferrer ousted in Nottingham: Top-seeded David Ferrer lost to Marcos Baghdatis 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the second round of the Aegon Classic at Nottingham in Nottingham, England.
Ferrer, the world No. 7, lost his first two service games to Baghdatis, who earned his first win over a top-10 player in more than two years.
Second-seeded Gilles Simon of France also struggled before rallying over Marcel Granollers of Spain.
• Only Jaguars mascot in history retires: For the second time in franchise history, the Jacksonville Jaguars are looking for a new mascot.
Or at least someone new to wear the “Jaxson de Ville” costume.
Curtis Dvorak, who has been “The Cat” since the mascot’s inception in 1996, announced he is retiring after 19 seasons.
The 39-year-old Dvorak entertained and often mesmerized fans with his fearless stunts , which most notably included bungee jumping from the top of scoreboards. He donned the suit for 192 games, including 37 preseason and three postseason.
His tenure also included some controversy. The NFL changed rules regarding mascot behavior in part because of Jaxson’s sideline and end zone antics in the late 1990s, and made headlines last fall after using the Ebola epidemic to mock the Pittsburgh Steelers.
