Jacobs gives Gonzaga baseball win over Tulane

Justin Jacobs delivered a two-out, two-RBI single in the top of the ninth to push Gonzaga past Tulane 2-0 on Friday in the opening game of a nonconference baseball series at New Orleans.

Brandon Bailey (3-1) picked up the win for the Bulldogs after striking out 10 and allowing just three hits over eight innings of work. David Bigelow relived Bailey after one batter in the ninth and proceeded to strike out two, including the final out of the game with runners on second and third, to earn his third save.

Jacobs was the only player for Gonzaga (6-7) with multiple hits, finishing 2 for 4. Corey Merrill (1-1) was the hard-luck loser for Tulane (11-3) after surrendering only four hits and walking none over 8 1/3 innings.

Washington State 14, Sacred Heart 2: The Cougars racked up 12 hits as they smashed the Pioneers (0-6) in the second game of a nonconference series Baliey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

Tyler McDowell was 2 for 2 at the plate with two RBIs for WSU (9-5) before making way for a substitute. Designated hitter Wes Leow also picked up two hits and two RBIs.

The Cougars Joe Pistorese (2-1) earned the win after striking out four over six innings.

Washington 3, Pepperdine 1: Tyler Davis equaled a career-high with 10 strikeouts and came within two outs of pitching a complete game as the Huskies defeated the Waves at Husky Ballpark in Seattle in a nonconference-series opener.

Davis (3-1) threw 126 pitches and allowed seven hits – the last a one-out bloop single in the ninth – before giving way to Spencer Jones, who retired the final two batters to earn his second save of the season.

Shortstop Chris Baker had two hits for Washington (10-4). Jackson McClelland (2-1) pitched all eight innings for Pepperdine (7-7)

The victory was the 150th of coach Lindsay Meggs’ six-year UW career.
