In brief: Mangok Mathiang lifts No. 16 Louisville past No. 2 Virginia
MEN’S BASKETBALL: Mangok Mathiang made a 15-footer with 2.5 seconds left to give No. 16 Louisville the lead in a 59-57 victory over No. 2 Virginia on Saturday night in Louisville, Kentucky.
Evan Notle’s inbounds pass went wide to end the Cavaliers’ chance for a last-second win, giving Louisville the ball back underneath its own goal. Terry Rozier made a free throw for the final margin.
Montrezl Harrell had 20 points and 12 rebounds in his last home game to help Louisville (24-7, 12-6) clinch the fourth seed in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.
Brogdon scored 16 of his 17 points in the second half for regular-season conference champion Virginia (28-2, 16-2).
• Duke beats rival UNC: Tyus Jones had a big second half to help No. 3 Duke (28-3, 15-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) shoot 59 percent after the break and beat No. 19 North Carolina (21-10, 11-7) 84-77 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Jones scored 17 of his season-high 24 in the second half for the Blue Devils, who capitalized on a handful of key turnovers by the Tar Heels to finally get a fragile hold on a game in which neither team could get many second-half stops.
• Illinois State takes down Wichita State: Daishon Knight capped a 25-point game with two critical free throws in the closing seconds and Illinois State (21-11) rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to beat No. 8 Wichita State (28-4) 65-62 in the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament in St. Louis.
Reggie Lynch added 11 points for the fourth-seeded Redbirds, who were 0-2 against the regular season champions in conference play and trailed by 12 in the first half. Illinois State has won six straight and will play No. 11 Northern Iowa, the second seed, for the Valley’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament in the final today.
Fred VanVleet had 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists for Wichita State, which was 17-1 in the conference with the lone loss at Northern Iowa.
• Sooners upset Jayhawks: Buddy Hield scored on a tip-in with 0.2 seconds left to give No. 15 Oklahoma a 75-73 victory over No. 9 Kansas in Norman, Oklahoma.
Hield got up high and got both hands on Jordan Woodard’s missed layup. Hield finished with 18 points and seven rebounds to help the Sooners (21-9, 12-6 Big 12) clinch at least a tie for second in the conference.
Frank Mason III tied a season high with 21 points for Kansas (24-7, 13-5).
• Kentucky caps undefeated regular season: Trey Lyles scored 14 points, Karl-Anthony Towns added 13 with nine rebounds and host No. 1 Kentucky (31-0, 18-0 Southeastern Conference) pulled away from Florida 67-50 to cap the storied program’s first unbeaten regular season.
A blue-clad sellout crowd cheered loudly as the final seconds wound down on the eight-time NCAA champions’ milestone achievement. Players soon donned blue T-shirts with “31-0” in white and the phrase “not done yet.”
Sixers upset short-handed Hawks
NBA: Hollis Thompson and Luc Mbah a Moute scored 19 points apiece and the Philadelphia 76ers surprised the short-handed Atlanta Hawks 92-84 in Philadelphia.
Nerlens Noel had 11 points and 17 rebounds to help the 76ers win for the second time in 11 games. Philadelphia (14-49) entered with the NBA’s second-worst record.
Jeff Teague had 17 points to pace Atlanta, which had its six-game winning streak snapped.
The Hawks (49-13), who came in with the best record in the league, rested starters Paul Millsap, Kyle Korver and DeMarre Carroll.
• James ties Cavs assist record: LeBron James tied Cleveland’s career assists record and scored 17 points in the host Cavaliers’ 89-72 victory over Phoenix.
James tied Mark Price at 4,206 assists in the third quarter. James was 6 for 16 from the field and had eight assists and six rebounds to help the Cavaliers win their 13th straight at home and move into a tie for second with Chicago in the Eastern Conference.
• Pelicans come back on Grizzlies: Tyreke Evans scored 26 points, Anthony Davis added 23 points and 10 rebounds, and New Orleans overcame an 18-point deficit to beat Memphis 95-89 in New Orleans.
Marchand’s two goals lead Bruins over Flyers
NHL: Boston’s Brad Marchand scored the tying goal late in regulation and added the winner in overtime as the Bruins beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 in Boston.
Zdeno Chara had a power-play goal for Boston, and Tuukka Rask made 29 saves, including two excellent stops in overtime.
Chris Vandevelde and Jakub Voracek scored for the Flyers, who fell five points behind Boston in the chase for the Eastern Conference’s second wild card.
• Predators lose sixth straight: Blake Wheeler scored the go-ahead goal midway through the second period, and Winnipeg sent host Nashville to its season-worst sixth straight defeat with a 3-1 win.
Michael Frolik and Drew Stafford also scored for the Jets, who have won two of three.
Before this skid, the Predators hadn’t lost three in a row all season.
Holmes, Johnson both register holes-in-one
MISCELLANY: J.B. Holmes and Dustin Johnson each made a hole-in-one on the par-3 fourth hole in a span of 20 minutes. Holmes was in a league of his own in the final hour at the Cadillac Championship in Doral, Florida.
His advantage down to one shot, Holmes answered by running off four straight birdies in the rain to expand his lead to the largest it has been all week. He closed with a bogey for a 2-under 70, leaving him five shots ahead of Johnson and Masters champBubba Watson.
On a day of two aces, five other eagles on par 4s and even a scuba driver retrieving the 3-iron that Rory McIlroy heaved into the lake the day before, Holmes took some of the drama out of Doral with his late surge.
• Ingram returning to Saints: New Orleans Saints running back Mark Ingram has agreed to a four-year contract extension.
Ingram was one of two first-round picks by New Orleans in 2011, the other being defensive end Cameron Jordan.
Before last season began, the Saints chose not to exercise Ingram’s option for 2015. Then Ingram proceeded to have the best season of his career in 2014, rushing for 964 yards and nine touchdowns, to go with 145 yards receiving.
• Bryan brothers lead U.S. in Davis Cup: Bob and Mike Bryan kept the United States alive in its Davis Cup first-round tie against Britain, holding off a comeback by Jamie Murray and Dominic Inglot to win the doubles in five sets in Glasgow, Scotland.
The Californian brothers reduced the Americans’ deficit to 2-1.
