Mavericks get big West win over Clippers

NBA: Chandler Parsons scored 22 points, Tyson Chandler had his 26th double-double and the Dallas Mavericks ran away from the visiting Los Angeles Clippers 129-99.

It was an important win for the Mavericks, who started the day in seventh place in the tightly packed Western Conference but pulled within a half-game of the fifth-place Clippers.

Parsons made 5 of 6 from 3-point range. Chandler finished with 14 points and 12 boards.

DeAndre Jordan paced the Clippers with 16 points and 18 rebounds.

• Nuggets rally for win over short-handed Warriors: Kenneth Faried had 24 points and 17 rebounds, Randy Foye hit three crucial 3-pointers down the stretch and the Denver Nuggets rallied to beat short-handed Golden State 114-103 as the visiting Warriors rested several of their top players, including Stephen Curry.

Golden State coach Steve Kerr gave Curry, Klay Thompson, Andre Iguodala and Andrew Bogut the night off.

• Westbrook’s triple-double leads Thunder past T-wolves: Russell Westbrook collected his sixth triple-double in eight games and scored 15 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter, helping the Oklahoma City Thunder pull away for a 113-99 victory over the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves.

He has eight triple-doubles this season and 16 in his career.

Ducks defeat Wild, snap 3-game skid

NHL: Jakob Silfverberg had the go-ahead goal and an assist, and John Gibson stopped 32 shots, helping the Anaheim Ducks end a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Francois Beauchemin scored first for the Ducks, who improved to 27-1-7 in one-goal games this season.

Zach Parise had a power-play goal for the Wild.

• Islanders beat Senators behind Hammond’s 34 saves: Matt Puempel and Kyle Turris scored second-period goals, and backup Andrew Hammond made 34 saves as the Ottawa Senators beat the New York Islanders 2-1 in Uniondale, New York.

Ottawa improved to 9-1-1 in its last 11 games to remain within striking distance of second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Islanders lost their third straight at home.

• Three power-play goals help Stars top Capitals: Vernon Fiddler notched a goal and an assist and the visiting Dallas Stars scored three power-play goals to beat the Washington Capitals 4-2.

Shawn Horcoff and Tyler Seguin also had man-advantage goals, and Colton Sceviour also scored. The Stars have won four of five overall.

Curtis Glencross and Evgeny Kuznetsov scored for the Caps.

Texas’ Darvish to have season-ending surgery

MLB: Yu Darvish said he didn’t need any more opinions once the first doctor recommended season-ending surgery on the ailing right elbow of the Texas Rangers ace.

The Japanese right-hander waited for two more reports anyway before the announcement that Dr. James Andrews will perform elbow ligament-replacement surgery on Tuesday in Gulf Breeze, Florida.

Andrews was the last of three doctors to review images of the 28-year-old’s elbow. Tommy John surgery likely will sideline Darvish until early 2016.

Darvish is 39-25 in 83 starts for the Rangers, with 680 strikeouts in 545 1/3 innings. He led MLB with 277 strikeouts in 2013.

• Dontrelle Willis ends comeback bid: The Milwaukee Brewers say pitcher Dontrelle Willis is ending his comeback bid and will retire at 33.

A popular star a decade ago, Willis was in the Brewers’ camp on a minor league contract. He had not pitched in a spring training game this year, and hasn’t been in the majors since 2011 with Cincinnati.

Willis was the N.L. Rookie of the Year in 2003 and helped the Marlins win the World Series.

• Foul ball kills bird in first inning of Tigers-Braves game:

A bird was struck and killed by a foul ball while perched atop the protective netting behind home plate during the first inning of the Tigers-Braves game in Kissimmee, Florida.

Detroit catcher James McCann hit a pitch from Atlanta starter Mike Foltynewicz toward the right side of the screen. The sharp liner made direct contact with the bird, sending it crashing to the first row of seats in a burst of feathers.

Woods to miss Bay Hill, Masters uncertain

Golf: Tiger Woods will not be at Bay Hill next week for the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the second tournament he has missed since stating a month ago that he would not return to golf until his game was ready.

Woods still wasn’t ruling out the Masters in a brief statement on his website.

“I’ve put in a lot of time and work on my game and I’m making strides,” Woods said. “But like I’ve said, I won’t return to the PGA Tour until my game is tournament ready and I can compete at the highest level.”

Woods is an eight-time winner at Bay Hill.

• De Jonge takes lead at Innisbrook; Scott misses cut: Brendon de Jonge rolled in two long putts on his way to a 2-under 69 for the 36-hole lead in the Valspar Championship in Palm Harbor, Florida.

De Jonge, who has never won on the PGA Tour, was at 6-under 136.

Adam Scott missed four putts inside 5 feet and shot a 75 to miss the cut for the first time in nearly three years. He had made 45 consecutive cuts dating to the Byron Nelson Championship in May 2012, the longest active streak on the tour.

Spokane’s Alex Prugh missed the cut.

Orlando City beats Dynamo for 1st win

Miscellany: Pedro Ribeiro forced the action that led to Houston goalkeeper Tyler Deric’s own goal in the 74th minute and expansion Orlando City beat the Dynamo 1-0 in Houston for its first MLS victory.

Ribeiro raced around Deric after he stuffed the keeper’s attempt to clear with a long ball. Deric wrapped his arm around Ribeiro’s head to prevent the open net goal and then tackled Ribeiro into the net with the ball after it was too late.

Donovan Ricketts earned the shutout for Orlando City (1-0-1).

• Fenninger takes overall World Cup lead: Anna Fenninger of Austria is back in the overall lead of the World Cup standings after winning a giant slalom race.

Fenninger finished 0.71 seconds ahead of Nadia Fanchini of Italy after two powerful runs in Are, Sweden.

Fenninger bumps Tina Maze – who finished 20th after a disappointing second run – from the top of the overall standings.

• Cimolai wins fifth stage of Paris-Nice race: Italian rider Davide Cimolai won the hilly fifth stage of the Paris-Nice race, attacking Bryan Coquard in the last 10 meters in a sprint to the line and beating the Frenchman by half a bike length.

The overall standings remain unchanged, with Polish rider Michal Kwiatkowski one second ahead of Richie Porte.
