Area roundup: Big inning lifts UW over Gonzaga

The Washington Huskies (14-10) scored seven runs in the fourth inning and breezed to a 7-3 victory over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (11-13) in nonconference baseball action on Tuesday at Patterson Baseball Complex.

The Huskies sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth, amassing seven hits, including three doubles. Six of the seven runs scored after two outs and four runs were unearned.

Jeffrey Bohling had two hits and scored twice for GU, while Justin Jacobs had GU’s only RBI.

Hunter Wells (0-1) took the loss for GU. He allowed six runs, three earned, on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Golf

Sean McMullen of the Idaho Vandals shot a 3-under-par 141 over two rounds to earn medalist honors at the Warrior Invitational at the Clarkston County Club.

Three Washington State Cougars – Charlie Mroz, Evan Omelia and Ryan Baumgart – tied for second with 144s. The Cougars and Vandals did not take part in the team event.

Lewis-Clark State’s Chris Lien shot a 1-over 145 to place fifth and help lead the Warriors (610) to a four-stroke win over runner-up Oregon Tech.

North Idaho – led by Michael Porter’s 156 (tied for 20th) – placed sixth.

Rocky Mountain College edged Lewis-Clark State by one stroke for the women’s team title.

Kyla Clancy of Rocky Mountain was the medalist at 8-over 152. Mackenzie Phillips of North Idaho (189) finished 21st.

• James Fahy shot a 2-under-par 214 to place third and the Gonzaga Bulldogs finished ninth at the Duck Invitational in Eugene, Oregon.

Medalist Jon Rahm (212) helped Arizona State win the team title.

Track and field

Two Washington State Cougars earned spots on the school’s all-time top-10 list with their performances at the Jim Bush Collegiate Team Invitational at UCLA’s Drake Stadium in Los Angeles.

WSU senior Jesse Jorgensen won the men’s 800-meter run with a lifetime best time of 1 minute, 47.06 seconds – good enough for 10th on the Cougars’ all-time list.

Liz Harper, a sophomore, ran the fifth-best time in winning the women’s 400 hurdles – finishing in a personal-best 59.18. Senior Erin Allen placed second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 59.26. Allen ran the sixth-best time of 59.19 last season.

Awards

Gonzaga’s Alvaro Nazal was named the WCC’s men’s singles player of the week after posting a 2-0 record as the Bulldogs split WCC matches.
