Signed The Jaguars signed first-round draft pick Dante Fowler Jr. to a four-year, $23.5 million contract. Fowler, the third overall pick in the draft, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee last Friday and will miss the entire season.

Arrested Former Browns and Jets receiver Braylon Edwards has been accused of driving while under the influence of alcohol. The 32-year-old Edwards was released in Scottsdale, Arizona, on suspicion of four misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence.

Awarded A Des Moines, Iowa, high school football player who suffered a serious head injury during practice has been awarded almost $1 million in a negligence case against the school district and a school nurse. The Des Moines Register reports 18-year-old Kacey Strough had a pre-existing condition and the 2013 head injury aggravated this. Strough’s attorney says his client was allowed to continue playing. Parted The Columbus Crew mutually agreed to part ways with defender Hernan Grana, granting the player’s wish to return home to address family issues in Argentina.

Died Former boxer Tony Ayala Jr., a rising star before a 1983 rape conviction that led to the first of two prison terms, died in his hometown of San Antonio. He was 52. There was no immediate cause of death.

Banned Russian race walker Tatyana Akulinushkina received a four-year ban for doping. She tested positive for the banned diuretic furosemide during a national team training camp in Sochi, Russia, on Feb. 20.

Removed Pole vault world record- holder Renaud Lavillenie withdrew from the Diamond League meet in Doha, Qatar, after injuring his right shoulder running in a 4x100-meter race for his club in France.

• European indoor pentathlon champion Katarina Johnson- Thompson pulled out of this month’s Hypo Meeting in Gotzis, Austria, because of a knee injury. The 22-year-old British heptathlete was injured in Prague in March.
