“Reflections Unheard: Black Women in Civil Rights” - Documentary presented by Spokane Feminist Forum with EWU’s Women’s Studies Department. Discussion will follow led by Spokane NAACP President and activist Rachel Dolezal. Panelists include Inga Laurent, attorney, activist and professor at Gonzaga University. Personal stories of several former black civil rights activists, the film unearths the lesser-known story of black women’s political marginalization between the male-dominated Black Power movement, and the predominantly white and middle class feminist movement during the 1960s and ’70s, as well as the resulting mobilization of black and other women of color into a united feminist movement. http://reflectionsunheardfilm.com/about/. SFCC International Film Festival - “Before Night Falls” tells the story of the renowned Cuban writer/novelist/poet Reinaldo Arenas, whose sexuality put him at odds with the Castro regime. After two years in prison, Arenas escapes to the U.S. and continues his writing. The film stars Javiar Bardem, Sean Penn and Johnny Depp. Rated R. “Kumiko the Treasure Hunter” (Not Rated) - Friday-May 24. In this darkly comedic odyssey, Academy Award nominee Rinko Kikuchi (“Babel,” “Pacific Rim”) stars as a frustrated office lady who becomes obsessed with a mysterious VHS tape of a popular film she’s mistaken for a documentary, fixating on a scene where a suitcase of stolen cash is buried in the desolate, frozen landscape of North Dakota. Believing this treasure to be real, she leaves Tokyo to recover it. Unrated.
