Prep roundup: Cheney district softball champ
Julia Boyd pitched a two-hitter, striking out 10, and hit a solo home run as Cheney defeated Pullman 8-3 in the District 7 2A softball title game Saturday in Cheney.
For the Blackhawks (19-2), Meghan Krantz finished 3 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs, and Cassie Schliep went 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI.
Cheney will host the Central Washington Athletic Conference’s No. 3 seed at 1 p.m. Saturday in a winner-to-state game. Pullman (9-10) will play at CWAC No. 2 at 1 p.m. Saturday in another winner-to-state.
4A/3A regional
Both regional fields were finalized after the Mid-Columbia Conference completed its district tournaments at Columbia Playfield at Richland.
Walla Walla upset league champion Richland 15-9 in the 4A title game. That set up a loser-out game at 4 p.m. Tuesday between Greater Spokane League No. 3 Mead (15-7) and MCC No. 2 Richland (18-3) at Columbia Playfield.
All other 4A/3A regional games are scheduled for Saturday at Columbia Playfield.
In 4A play, GSL No. 1 University (18-4) will meet MCC No. 1 Walla Walla (17-5) at noon in a winner-to-state game. GSL No. 2 Central Valley (12-10) will play the Mead/Richland winner at noon in a loser-out. The U-Hi/Walla Walla loser will play the winner of CV’s game at 2 p.m. for the other berth.
In 3A, GSL No. 1 Shadle Park (19-2) plays MCC No. 1 Kamiakin (15-6) at noon in a winner-to-state game. GSL No. 2 North Central (10-11) will meet MCC No. 2 Southridge (9-11) at noon in a loser-out. The Shadle/Kamiakin loser and NC/Southridge winner play at 2 p.m. for the other berth.
7/9 1B regional
Dani Hayes bunted home Kenedee Loomis with the go-ahead run in a three-run fifth as Almira/Coulee-Hartline edged Touchet 3-2 at Medical Lake despite being held to one hit.
The victory advanced ACH (14-3) to a winner-to-state game against Liberty Christian (16-3) at noon Saturday, also at Medical Lake.
Renee Wynne finished 4 for 4 with two RBIs to lead Cusick (13-5) to a 7-4 win over Pomeroy. Iola Hansen was 3 for 4 with an RBI and Brianna Balcolm struck out six for the Panthers, who play six-time defending state champ Colton (17-3) at noon Saturday at ML for a state berth.
Zoe Moser and Winnie Schultheis combined on a no-hitter in Colton’s 11-1 win over Republic.
Pomeroy (12-9) ousted Republic (3-16) with a 10-9 victory ignited by a four-run sixth. Judy Thompson had an RBI single and Zoe Kern an RBI double in the rally. The Pirates will play a winner-to-state, loser-out game at 2 p.m. Saturday at ML.
Curlew (17-6) avoided elimination as Kayleona Fanning singled, doubled and tripled during a 12-6 win over Touchet (8-11). Curlew will play a winner-to-state, loser-out game at 2 p.m. Saturday at ML.
Boys soccer
Jesus Meraz-Rodriguez’s goal in the 72nd minute broke a 1-all tie and gave Pasco a 2-1 win over Lewis and Clark in a winner-to-state, loser-out 4A regional match in Pasco.
LC’s Chandler Goff tied it a 1 in the 35th minute before Meraz-Rodriguez’s winner.
• Mason Petrino’s goal in the 63rd minute gave host Pullman a 1-0 win over Grandview in a 2A regional match to earn a state berth. The goal came following a free kick. Micah Lagerquist swung the ball into the penalty area and, after a loose-ball scramble, Petrino scored.
Pullman will host Quincy on Tuesday in the first round of the State 2A tournament.
• Cheney was eliminated after falling 5-4 to host Quincy in a shootout in a 2A regional game.
Blackhawks goalkeeper Kam Galm made six saves in regulation and two overtime periods to preserve a scoreless tie prior to the shootout.
Tennis
Lewis and Clark’s Luke Brittan beat University’s Kyle Smithgall 6-1, 6-2 for the boys singles title at the District 8 4A tourney at Hart Field in Spokane.
The doubles title went to LC’s Kyle Fager and Jordan Strandness, who beat teammates Jacob Johnson and Kenny Woodhead 6-2, 6-0.
For the girls, Central Valley’s Kyra Harames claimed the singles title after defeating Gonzaga Prep’s Lizzy Marcinkowski 6-0, 6-0.
University’s Rilee Skidmore and Katelyn Schmidt won the doubles.
• Clarkston’s Paige Rohrbach claimed the girls singles title by beating Cheney’s Katelynn Smedley 6-4, 6-4 at the District 7 2A tournament at Washington State University in Pullman.
The girls doubles title went to Pullman’s Alexa Yadama and Lizzie George, who beat Clarkston’s Halle Berg and Addie Folsom 6-1, 6-2.
In boys, Clarkston’s Don Arsenev beat West Valley’s Cameron Conner 6-2, 7-5 in the singles title match. Pullman’s Jacob Weirich and Curtis Jeffery beat Clarkston’s Colby Savage and Gregory Arthur for the boys doubles title 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
• Lind-Ritzville/Sprague’s Rosie Melville defeated Colfax’s Lura Potter 7-6, 6-1 in the girls singles title match at the District 7 1B/2B tourney.
St. George’s Michael Hamilton won the boys singles title after defeating teammate Mark Hay 6-1, 7-5.
