Area roundup: Chiefs sign No. 9 pick Koby Morrisseau
The Spokane Chiefs announced the signing of forward Koby Morrisseau, the ninth overall selection in the Western Hockey League’s bantam draft, to a standard player agreement.
Morrisseau, a 6-foot-1, 170-pounder from Grandview, Manitoba, totaled 39 goals and 22 assists with Parkland Rangers Bantam AAA team this season.
The Chiefs have signed both of their first-round picks. No. 1 overall selection Ty Smith signed on May 11.
Track and field
Whitworth’s Dakota Kliamovich finished fifth in the women’s hammer throw at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Canton, New York.
Kliamovich reached a distance of 178 feet, 10 inches. The throw was 13 inches short of the school record Kliamovich set last season.
The Pirates’ Kayla Leland earned a spot in today’s 800-meter final after finishing third in her heat.
Baseball
Brandon Berry had two hits, including a solo home run, and drove in two runs to guide Washington past Utah 6-2 in the opener of a three-game Pac-12 Conference series at Husky Ballpark in Seattle.
Braden Bishop added three hits and an RBI for the Huskies, who scored three runs in the fifth to break a 2-all tie.
Washington starter Noah Bremer earned the win after allowing two runs on five hits in five innings.
The Huskies improved to 27-25 overall and 12-16 in conference games. Utah fell to 16-34-1 and 7-20-1.
