Education Notes: University High hosts Hooper Bowl
University Elementary School is hosting Hooper Bowl, a teachers versus teachers basketball game, on Friday. The event will include a silent auction to raise money to send fifth-graders to Gonzaga University for a day.
The auction begins at 5:30 p.m. and closes at halftime. The game begins at 6:15 p.m. at Bowdish Middle School, 2109 S. Skipworth Road, Spokane Valley.
Admission is $1 per person.
Cheney High School places in WSBL
The Cheney High School Future Business Leaders of America Club recently participated in the Washington State Business Leader conference.
Fifty-three students competed, and 21 placed in the top five. The students who placed in the top three earned automatic entry to the FBLA national conference, which will be June 29-July 2 in Chicago.
In first place: Joe Riddle (database design), Jackson Spencer (impromptu speaking and sales presentation), Kendra Kendall and Leanna Eik (life smarts) and Mitch Lawrence (Microsoft Office specialist Word).
In second place: Mac Frederick (database design), Breanna Stewart and Sydney Zapf (digital design and promotion), Kendra Kendall, Chayce Moore and Andrew Jenkins (management information systems), Joe Riddle (networking concepts), Hannah Blazon, Kaetlyn Blazon and Connor Gerstenkorn (public service announcement) and Kendra Kendall (spreadsheet applications).
In third place: Jennifer Harbick (3-D animation and introduction to business communication), Claire Arensmenyer and Bradlee Powell (partnership with business) and Jackson Spencer (public speaking II).
In fourth place: Hannah Blazon and Connor Gerstenkorn (3-D animation), Kendra Kendall (computer applications), Hannah Blazon (database design) and Linsay Sweitzer (electronic career portfolio).
In fifth place: Ian Case, Linsay Sweitzer and Keith Emert (management information systems), Caleb Williamson (networking concepts), Anna Arensmeyer (public speaking I) and Linsay Sweitzer (website design).
Club member Ethan Sugimura was elected as the state secretary for the conference, the first officer selected from Eastern Washington in eight years.
Students ear
The following Cheney High School students have earned the Seal of Biliteracy through the Standards-Based Measurement of Proficiency test or the Advanced Placement test:
French: Copper Wilson, Caleb Athonvaragkul, Leanna Eik and Linsay Sweitzer.
Spanish: Sonora Hetrick, Eva Bautista, Elizabeth Fix, Olivia Cook and Yashuel Campos.
Tagalog: Aileen Sigua.
Rotary club awards Valley students
The Rotary Club of Spokane Valley awarded $1,000 scholarships to the following students:
Karina Zhuk, East Valley High School; Spencer Miller, Central Valley High School; Ethan Gering, Central Valley High School; Emily Schelin, Barker High School; Gleb Liashedko, West Valley School District; and Riley Madrian, Central Valley High School.
The students may apply the scholarship to a college of their own choice.
Spokane schools make U.S. News list
U.S. News Education recently released its rankings of the nation’s best high schools.
The following area schools received a silver medal: Lewis & Clark (ranked 1,074 nationally), North Central (ranked 1,148 nationally), Freeman (ranked 1,683 nationally), Shadle Park (ranked 2,013 nationally) and Ferris (ranked 2,354 nationally).
Cheney and Three Springs high schools both earned a bronze medal, as did Deer Park High School, the Mead Education Partnership Program, the Bryant Center and Spokane Valley High School.
