What it means for WSU: The Cougars are still searching for their first winning season since 2003 and a win over UCLA would assure one. WSU has also not won in the Rose Bowl since 2006 and has not beaten the Bruins since 2007, so the Cougars can end a few dubious streaks this week. Furthermore, a victory would put WSU in prime position for an eight- or nine-win season, considering their other remaining opponents, Colorado and Washington, each have sub-.500 records.
What it means for UCLA: UCLA’s pass defense has been among the country’s best over the last three games, after making it fairly easy for quarterbacks in the first six games. That defense won’t face a tougher test than WSU’s Air Raid offense, or its maestro, Luke Falk, who leads the country in passing with 3,736 yards and is tied for second with 33 aerial touchdowns.
Key matchup: WSU left tackle Gunnar Eklund vs. UCLA defensive end Takkarist McKinley
While the Bruins only sacked opposing passers nine times in their first six games, the UCLA defense has come up with eight sacks in its past three. The improved pass rush is led by defensive end Takkarist McKinley, who had two sacks against Oregon State last weekend. Gunnar Eklund is getting used to his old left tackle position – he started 12 games at left tackle in 2013 – after sliding over from left guard. He’ll have to remember his old techniques quickly to keep McKinley away from Falk.
