McKellen shines as ‘Mr. Holmes’

Mr. Holmes stars Ian McKellen as the iconic detective in retirement at age 93, trying to recall his fateful final case while tending his bees and facing his greatest challenge ever: old age and memory loss. McKellan brings out the fragility and vulnerability behind the imperious manner. It’s PG and also on DVD, Blu-ray and digital formats.

Amy Schumer takes her act to the big screen in the raunchy and hilarious Trainwreck,” playing a foul-mouthed, binge-drinking professional more interested in sex than romance. It fully earns its R rating. Also available in a longer unrated edition.

Also new this week: Terminator Genisyswith Arnold Schwarzenegger and Emilia Clarke (PG-13, in 3-D on some systems), the sci-fi thriller Self/less with Ryan Reynolds (PG-13), and the acclaimed indie comedy Tangerine,” which was shot entirely on iPhone (R).

Available same day as select theaters nationwide is Heist with Robert De Niro and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (R) and Shelter with Jennifer Connelly and Anthony Mackie (no rating).

W/ Bob and David: Season 1(Netflix Original) reunites Bob Odenkirk and David Cross for a new skit comedy show in the spirit of their cult series “Mr. Show.”

Keira Knightly is Anna Karenina (2012) in this lush and unconventional adaptation of the Tolstoy classic. Jude Law co-stars (R).

Amazon Prime Video

It’s Amazon Pilot Season again, and you don’t have to be a Prime member to watch or cast a vote on the series proposals. Highlights include Z,” a period drama with Christina Ricci as Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald; One Mississippiwith comedian Tig Notaro; Edge,” a violent western from creator Shane Black; and Good Girls Revolt,” inspired by the women employees of Newsweek who sued for sexual discrimination in 1969. The historical mini-series Wolf Hallwith Mark Rylance is a handsome BBC production that sidesteps melodrama and spectacle for a nuanced look at how power is negotiated behind the scenes of the British monarchy.

HBO Now

Unfinished Business with Vince Vaughn and Dave Franco is new (R). Arriving Saturday night is the action thriller Run All Night with Liam Neeson (R) and the concert U2: iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Live in Paris.”
