Obituary: Coumbs, Wanda Ruth (Shugart)
Age 96
She leaves behind a family who loved her dearly.
They will always remember fondly her love of family, laughter, people, and nature, but most of all her remarkable faith.
Wanda was born and spent her years in an area near Leavenworth, WA, known as Shugart Flats.
She was the second of three children born to George and Haley Shugart, including her brother Oscar and sister Lois (Larsen).
She married Don Coumbs in 1942, and they had two boys, George (Lee) and Roger (Roy).
The family moved from Hillyard, WA to a ranch in Newport, WA where the boys grew up and graduated from high school and where the family worshipped together at Dalkena Community Church.
It was here that Don passed away in 1963 with Wanda by his side.
Wanda was very proud to be one of the first Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and always had a special place in her heart for the time spent working in Alaska with the Alaskan Native Service.
Her strong, independent spirit lead her on many adventures; her love of nature meant nights sleeping in her van or yard instead of in the house; her love of people made it hard to know if she had just met the person she was hugging and laughing with, or if she had known them for years.
The thing that she was most proud of was her family.
While she was preceded in death by many family members and close friends, she is survived by her two sons, Lee Coumbs of Centralia, WA and Roy Coumbs of Cheney, WA, one grandson, four granddaughters, three great-grandsons, seven great-granddaughters, and some pretty great in-laws they picked up along the way.
All of them, Wanda would tell you, know the Lord.
She will be missed.
But we will watch Gonzaga basketball and play cribbage in memory of her and her smile while we do, thankful to have been loved by such a great lady.
