Women’s college basketball: WSU and EWU win, CCS falls
Dawnyelle Awa scored 16 points, a career high, and tournament MVP Borislava Hristova also had 16 to lead Washington State over host Hawaii 62-52 on Sunday to win the Rainbow Wahine Classic.
Washington State (4-0) trailed by seven in the first half before coming back to a 32-31 lead at the break and never trailed again.
Brianna Harris got Hawaii (3-1) within six points on a jumper with 57 seconds left but Taylor Edmonson scored on a layup, Louis Brown made a steal and Awa put in two free throws with 18 seconds left for the final score.
Taylor Edmonson added 10 points for the Cougars, who turned 23 Hawaii turnovers into 21 points. WSU made 14 steals, five by Awa, who was named to the all-tournament team.
The Cougars return to Pullman to host San Jose State on Friday for a 7 p.m. game.
EWU defeats Northridge: Delaney Hodgins scored a career-high 20 points and Eastern Washington defeated Cal State Northridge 70-59 in Cheney.
Hodgins was 7 of 12 from the field and added seven rebounds and four assists. Hayley Hodgins added 18 points and had five steals and two blocks. Tisha Phillips finished 12 points and led EWU (3-1) with eight rebounds and five assists.
The Eagles turned 19 offensive rebounds into 18 second-chance points to help offset a 3-of-23 showing from 3-point range.
EWU led the Matadors (0-4) by four at halftime before extending their lead to 52-42 in the third quarter with nine points from Hayley Hodgins.
CC Spokane loses: Turnovers helped lead to CC Spokane’s first loss as they lost to the Lane Titans 85-80 at the Lane Classic in Eugene.
The Sasquatch (2-1) had 19 turnovers which Lane turned into 30 points.
Khadija Neumeyer led CCS with 21 points and eight rebounds with Kierstyn Russell adding 18 points and Bri King 16.
There were eight ties and 14 lead changes.
