Ohio State stays No. 1 in poll shakeup
Top 25: Ohio State remained No. 1 in the Associated Press college football Top 25 and tied a poll record, despite lagging support from the voters.
Meanwhile, No. 2 TCU and No. 3 Baylor edged forward, No. 4 Michigan State slipped, and No. 5 Utah and No. 6 Clemson took big jumps.
After four top-10 teams lost on Saturday, the rankings were rattled and five teams received first-place votes. TCU has five first-place votes, Baylor received 10, Utah has seven and No. 9 Texas A&M has one.
The Buckeyes have been top-ranked 101 times, matching Oklahoma for the most in the 79-year history of the media poll.
Parker leads U.S. women win in Spain
Basketball: Candace Parker had a triple-double with 14 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds to help the U.S. women’s team open its European tour with a 94-52 victory over Uni Girona in Girona, Spain.
The Los Angeles Sparks star was 7 of 11 from the field and had three steals and two blocks.
Elena Delle Donne of the Chicago Sky had 21 points in her first game for the national team.
The Americans will face Italy in Rome on Wednesday night.
Golf: Thorbjorn Olesen overcame a shaky start to protect his overnight lead and win the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship by two shots in St. Andrews, Scotland.
Olesen, who entered the final round with a three-shot lead, finished with an 18-under total of 270.
The Dane earned his third European Tour title after showing his mastery of links courses, having finished runner-up here in 2012.
Horse Racing: Golden Horn pulled away down the stretch to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris as Treve was denied a historic treble at Europe’s richest turf race.
Jockey Frankie Dettori overcame an outside draw to post his fourth victory at Longchamp as Golden Horn finished ahead of Flintshire, who was runner-up for the second straight year. New Bay finished third.
Pre-race favorite Treve, who last year became the first horse since Alleged in 1977-78 to earn back-to-back wins in the Prix de l’Arc, came in fourth.
Brazil’s duo win FIVB World Tour Finals
Volleyball: Brazil’s Talita Antunes and Larissa Franca won the FIVB World Tour Finals in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, beating Germany’s Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst 21-17, 21-18 to extend their international winning streak to 27 matches.
Antunes and Franca earned $100,000, the richest prize in beach volleyball, and finished the season with seven victories and a record $435,000. The have 11th since forming the partnership in July 2014.
Brazil’s Bruno Oscar Schmidt and Alison Cerutti won the men’s title, topping Americans Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena 21-13, 21-15. They also earned $100,000 for their sixth victory of the season.
