Bell’s TD run leads Gonzaga Prep to victory

Tri-City Herald

RICHLAND – Quarterback Liam Bell scored on a 2-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter to help lift Gonzaga Prep to a 13-10 season-opening football victory at Richland.

The Bombers attempted a 53-yard field goal with under 1:30 to go, but for the second time in the game the Bullpups came up with a block.

Gonzaga Prep allowed Richland just 10 yards offense and three first downs – two coming on penalties – in the second half.

Alex Chapman helped keep Richland in the game with two second-half interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown that gave the Bombers the lead, 10-6, at 8:44 of the third.

With the score tied at 3 late in the first half, Prep went 68 yards on 11 plays. The drive that started at their own 27 resulted in a Jared Kutsch 22-yard field goal with 1.4 seconds left before the half.

Before that drive, Prep had just 48 yards of total offense.

Late in the first half, Richland recovered a fumble at the Bullpups 7. But the Bombers lost 4 yards on three plays before a field-goal try was blocked.
