Idaho Vandals should step up, apologize

Football players at the University of Idaho steal $400 of merchandise from the VandalStore and the coaching staff steps in to whitewash the event.

There are claims that the matter will be handled internally, but without names how can we be sure? I doubt all UI students enjoy such remarkable consideration by the faculty. The school administration has abdicated to the athletic department to handle this with the apparent goal of ensuring that these players will be able to play football. So much for a universal student code of conduct.

What should the players themselves think about this? When caught, a truly honorable person would have returned the articles in person and made a personal apology to the store manager and the student body. Being honest and responsible for your actions are not hard concepts for a college student, especially if you believe in sports “fair play.”

Will the players show courage to face reasonable public consequences or will the players let the school shield them and again prove that personal honor in sports both on and off the field is a myth when the consequences are too great?

Spokane golf disappointment

Heads up! As a 60-year-plus resident and patron of Spokane’s once-revered golf Valhallas, I had a recent most unpleasant experience at Esmeralda – $56 for 18 holes, half-cart and bucket of balls.

I expressed my disappointment with the pro. While he was a nice enough fellow, I was subjected to an unsolicited explanation to include the standard bureaucratic talking points to justify said fees.

I assume the end game from Spokane Parks and Recreation is we seniors can vote with our feet.

Perfect! I and scores of my friends will do so. So sad, too bad. No mas!
