Pete Carroll: Seahawks moving forward without holdout Kam Chancellor

Bob Condotta Seattle Times

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Monday there is no change on the Kam Chancellor front during his first regular season radio show on 710 ESPN Seattle, the team’s flagship station.

Carroll said for now, the team is moving on without Chancellor, saying “we have to go ahead.”

Carroll also called this “a big week” to see where things are headed with Chancellor, while not seeming to indicate anything is due to change. He also responded “not really” when asked if there is anything that could happen the first few weeks of the season that could change the team’s stance on Chancellor.

“Everything is pretty well-stated and we know where he’s coming from,” Carroll said.

Carroll also said there wasn’t any deadline for Chancellor to report – basically, no real specifics about anything on Chancellor other than he’s not there now.

Chancellor has held out since camp began July 31, meaning today would be his 39th day of holding out.

He is now at risk of missing weekly game checks, which are $267,647 for Chancellor – players receive one-seventeenth of their base salary each week.

Carroll said Saturday’s trade of a fifth-round pick to get safety Kelcie McCray from Kansas City will help the team at both free safety and strong safety, saying “he’s very well-versed.”

Carroll said the Chiefs are deep in the secondary, “which is why he was available,” but that the Chiefs also didn’t want to give him up, which is why Seattle had to give up a fifth-round pick. Seattle wouldn’t likely have had a chance to get him on waivers.

Carroll said McCray will be “a core special teams guy immediately” and will gradually work his way into playing safety.

As for the possibility of Chancellor not playing against the Rams, Carroll said fans “are going to be disappointed not to see Kam out there like we all will be.”

In other notes….

• Carroll confirmed the signing of veteran free agent running back Fred Jackson, who reportedly will wear No. 22 with Tye Smith moving to No.21. Carroll said Jackson should be especially helpful in passing downs, something the team needed with Robert Turbin headed to IR and something he said was not a forte of Christine Michael’s.

• Speaking of Michael, asked why it didn’t work out for him here, Carroll said simply “it just didn’t.”

• Asked if anyone made the team with what they did in the final preseason game, Carroll mentioned B.J. Daniels and said he had taken only about 25 snaps at quarterback during camp “so imagine how that didn’t help him out.” Carroll said Daniels’ good showing at QB against the Raiders showed he could be a backup if Tarvaris Jackson has any issues getting ready for the Rams.

• Asked about Kevin Smith and Kasen Williams making the practice squad, Carroll said “both those guys played great in preseason and practices” and “made a big statement about how they could fit right now.”

• Carroll said TE Cooper Helfet, who did not play against the Raiders, has a sprained knee. LB Mike Morgan has a pulled hamstring. Along with Jackson, it sounds like those are the only real injury issues for the Seahawks.

• Carroll said FS Earl Thomas will be ready to go. “I think it’s going to be really exciting to see him out there,”Carroll said.
