Obituary: Waller, Darroll A.

WALLER, Darroll A. Darroll A. Waller, age 91, died August 28, 2015 at Good Samaritan Society, Spokane Valley.

A talented athlete and career educator, Darroll was a committed family man and known for his enduring, dry wit.

Born in Spokane in 1924, Darroll was a life-long Spokane area resident.

He graduated from Gonzaga Preparatory, received a Bachelors of Science Degree in Police Science from Washington State University and briefly attended Gonzaga University.

Darroll also earned a Bachelors degree in teaching and a Masters degree in Education from Eastern Washington University.

Darroll dedicated his career to education beginning as an elementary school teacher in St. Mary’s, Idaho.

He then moved to Spangle, Washington where he taught, coached athletics and drove the school bus.

Greenacres Elementary School was his next challenge, this time as Principal.

Moving up the ladder once again, he became Curriculum Director for East Valley School District.

Darroll culminated his life’s work as Superintendent of Schools at East Valley, the job from which he retired.

Darroll distinguished himself as a champion athlete.

From Gonzaga Prep to WSU and Gonzaga University, he proved to be an all-around athlete playing baseball, basketball, track & field and football.

He was the second 4-sport letterman on the West Coast after Jackie Robinson and received letters of interest from several professional baseball teams.

Darroll is survived by his wife, Mary, three children, Mark Waller, Sharon Kinder and Julie Hobizal, six grandchildren, Noel, Petra, Jesse, Abby, Jacob and Alec, and seven great-grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on September 12th at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Otis Orchards.
